Information Technology Ms. Rocío Acevedo August 2006

Information Technology  It is the science that let us better communicate, analyze and understand information.  It studies and teach us everything about computers.

 A computer is an electronic device which...  with certain given data (INPUT)...  makes mathematical and logical operations (PROCESSING)....  to give us information as an answer (OUTPUT). Computer

InputProcessingOutput Data Information CPU CPU Computer Basic Functions

Types of Computers By size  PC (personal computer) – a computer designed for general use by a single person (microcomputers).

Types of Computers By size  Desktop – a PC not designed for portability  Notebook or Laptop – portable computer battery-operated  PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) – a tightly integrated computer (flash memory & touch screen).

Types of Computers By size  Wearable - The latest trend in computing is wearable computers. Essentially, common computer applications ( , database, multimedia, calendar/scheduler) are integrated into watches, cell phones, etc.

Types of Computers By size  Workstation – a desktop computer that has a more powerful processor, additional memory and enhanced capabilities for performing a special group of task.  Server – a computer that has been optimized to provide services to other computers over a network. Servers usually have powerful processors, lots of memory and large hard drives.

Types of Computers By size  Mainframe - the term mainframe has fallen out of use in favor of enterprise server. The term is still used, particularly in large companies to describe the huge machines processing millions of transactions every day.

Types of Computers By size  Supercomputer - Usually costs hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. Some are single computer systems, but most are comprised of multiple high performance computers working in parallel as a single system.

Computer Parts Hardware Physical part: computer, internal components and devices. Software Logical part, the programs and data needed to give results.
