Status of Automatic Weather Stations 74 AWS´s working with near real time availability of data on the Internet Highly probable that for the NAME the number will climb to 84 Measurements (averages or accumulations) at 10 minute intervals GOES telemetry every 3 hours “Publication on Internet time lag” between 15 and 75 minutes, depending on the actual time of transmission

Where are the SMN AWS´s? (Among the 10 new ones, only Hermosillo is in NW México)

Available variables on SMN AWS´s Temperature Pressure Rel.humidity Precipitation Solar radiation Sustained wind (magnitude) (direction) Gust wind (magnitude) (direction)

Examples from AWS´s data

What other AWS´s could be available? 25 AWS´s operated by SEMAR (mexican military Navy) (only 22 on this map) (other 39 non-telemetric) (telemetry through the Solidaridad satellite)

What other AWS´s could be available? 10 AWS´s operated by GASIR-CNA (Surface Hydrology & River Engineering) (GOES telemetry)

What other AWS´s could be available? 44 AWS´s operated by CILA (International Boundary and Water Commission-Mexican side) (GOES telemetry)

What other AWS´s could be available? Several agromet networks (for example 2 in the state of Sonora) 7 Agro-AWS´s near Hermosillo 10 Agro-AWS´s near Caborca 16.4 km 14.7 km (usually “short range” telemetric)

Meteorological Observatories 83 surface synoptic stations Nominally: measurements every hour, transmission every 3 hours (8/day) “Pen and paper” recording instruments Reality: –Staff of 7 required for full operation –On average staffed by 4.3 observers –Down from 5.1 a few months ago –Can still go down from now to summer-2004 Data available in near real time from WMO- GTS (for example WAFS station)

Where are the Meteorological Observatories?

How are the NW-Mexico Meteorological Observatories staffed? (above + or below – ideal staff of 7)

Radiosonde stations (15 co-located with observatories except Cancun) ?

Staff to perform extra flights on radiosonde stations ? (above + or below – ideal staff of 7) 0

Weather radars ? ?

Traditional climatological stations (~ 850 with daily report ~ 2750 operating)
