Warm-Up  Update Table of Contents  File your science test and vocabulary quiz in your folder DateSession # ActivityPage # 10/15 19Notes – (write what’s in green)33 Poor Man’s Gatorade34

Test Tomorrow: Big Reminders  Bring calculators – TI 89 & TI 98 NOT allowed  Bring a lunch  We will have to stay quiet until 2:05 when everyone is done  No phones/electronic devices/NO HIGHLIGHTERS  Test is timed – no extra time is given – must go in order  Seated alphabetically – 3 feet apart – 25 students only

 Why Isn’t Water Always Enough? What does our body really need?

Big Idea: Water is important on Earth, but it is even more important in your body! WARM-UP: Answer on page 33 of your notebook !  What does the average person’s body need to carry out all of it’s normal everyday functions?  What does an athlete’s body need to function at a higher performing level?

Every cell in our body is about 2/3 water…water that we need to survive. What happens as we start to lose some of this water?

Dehydration  Excessive loss of the body’s water.

Dehydration  What really happens when we sweat?  What has been lost that our body needs?

Dehydration  Does water meet all of our needs to replenish what has been lost?  What do sports drinks like Gatorade have to offer that water does not?

Electrolytes As for your body, the major electrolytes are as follows:  sodium (Na + )  potassium (K + )  chloride (Cl - )  calcium (Ca 2+ )  magnesium (Mg 2+ )  bicarbonate (HCO 3 - )  phosphate (PO 4 2- )  sulfate (SO 4 2- ) Compounds in the blood that conduct electricity, and are essential for health.

“The Legend of Gatorade”  com/watch?v=hpCS vV70SCY

 What’s the Real Difference? Examine the nutrition label on both the bottle of water, and the bottle of Gatorade. Compare & Contrast the contents.

Water Vs. Gatorade  WATER  GATORADE

Rehydration: The Epic Battle Between Water and Gatorade  Situations in which water is enough to replenish your body… VS.  Situations in which water just isn’t enough…

BIG IDEA:  Dehydration doesn’t only affect athletes, it is a life or death situation in many countries.  Link this idea back to water availability and water sustainability!

Real World Extension “The Poor Man’s Gatorade Article & Lab”

 Classwork: “Save the World One Sip at a Time” If you were a doctor with the World Health Organization and you knew that Poor Man’s Gatorade was a life saving solution to dehydration how would you get the whole world on board to help? OPTIONS: - Create a one page advertisement that you would give to inform and influence others to help this global problem - - Create a proposal/plan that you would like the government to follow in order to help other countries overcome this global problem
