BP Educational Resources www.bp.com This PowerPoint presentation is a tool describing the general structure and design of BP’s North American education portal, created to assist educators who are looking for energy resources for their students, and provides classroom suggestions for helping students learn about energy. This new education portal was developed using suggestions from previous A+ for Energy® winners. Suggestions and recommendations from new A+ for Energy® winners and visitors to the site are welcomed in order to continuously improve the usefulness of the site. Slide 28 of this presentation describes how to provide feedback, suggestions and recommendations. (Note: This presentation includes interactive programs that will link properly only if the entire folder containing the programs and the presentation is in one location on your computer - either the supplied CD or copied on to your computer’s desktop.)

BP Education Landing Page BP News and Information BP U.S. Navigation Bar Site navigation markers showing where you are at all times on the site This main landing page of the North American education portal illustrates how users can navigate the site to browse or to look for specific resources. The Navigation Bar shows how to quickly jump to specific resources within the larger BP site The navigation markers (breadcrumbs) show the path/links you have chosen to arrive at the page you are viewing. Clicking on any of the markers will take you back the number of pages you wish. The vertical Education Website Navigation Bar on the left allows you to choose specific resources within the education site (e.g. BP and education; Education resources; etc.) The following 4 slides show the four main sections within the education site. BP and Education Education is a natural priority for BP in the countries where we operate. In the United States, we focus our activities on energy, math and science education. In addition, to assist teachers in searching for energy resources that will be useful for their students, pull-down menus within each category list resources by their alignment to primarily elementary, secondary, or preK-12 education. (these alignments are simply suggestions to assist educators in guiding their search for grade-level resources). State by State Each resource found within this website is aligned to the content standards for A+ for Energy eligible locations. Download the alignment chart to use when selecting resources for the grade level you teach. The State by State resources are documents prepared to assist teachers in aligning energy resources available on the education website to specific state’s respective state/provincial standards. The annotated alignments also provide a way to search for specific available resources by grade level or standard - and each resource is followed by a brief description of the resources. Resources by Grade Span Name of Resource Description Instructional Suggestions Link to the Resource Each resource listed has it’s own page and includes a descriptive annotation, instructional suggestions for how the resources may be used, and a link to the resource. (Suggested alignments to specific State or Provincial standards for each resource may be found on the main landing page as previously described on slides 3 and 6 of this presentation.)

Interactive / Simulations The Carbon Footprint Calculator allows students to determine the carbon they contribute to the atmosphere. Teachers can have students explore ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Data can be used for graphing, research or writing. Teachers might use this simulation within the context of their science, mathematics, social studies, or English-language arts classes. Some of the resources include web-based interactive simulations, such as the one illustrated above. This particular simulation provides teachers with an interactive tool that allows students to calculate the average amount of carbon their families contribute to the atmosphere depending on lifestyle. (Note: The slide image above is linked to a basic Carbon Footprint Calculator program that should be included within the parent folder for this PowerPoint presentation. In order for the PowerPoint presentation’s embedded links to work properly, all parts of the program and presentation must be in the same folder. The Carbon Footprint Calculator program files included with this PowerPoint presentation are basic - the Carbon Footprint Calculator program on the education website is more extensive.)

Interactive / Simulations The Windfarm is a downloadable simulation that asks students to position the turbines to generate maximum electricity while minimizing disturbances to wildlife and local people. Teachers might use this to help students understand wind patterns, examine city planning decisions, or within the context of a study on electrical generation / renewable energy. The resource above is a downloadable interactive simulation that can be run on multiple computers (if available). This provides teachers with an interactive tool illustrating the social and environmental considerations that must be taken into account when planning and constructing windfarms, an alternative energy source. (Note: The slide image above is linked to the downloadable “Windfarm” flash program that should be included within the parent folder for this PowerPoint presentation. In order for the PowerPoint presentation’s embedded links to work properly, all parts of the program and presentation must be in the same folder.)

Interactive Site The Engineers interactive site allows students to explore questions related to engineering such as: What is engineering Who are engineers Types of engineers Where engineers work Teachers can use this to help students understand career pathways. The resource above is a web-based interactive site. This provides teachers with an interactive tool to allow teachers or students to explore careers in engineering. The graphics and animations within the site make this an entertaining and useful resource to show career pathways and opportunities. (Note: The slide image above is linked to the actual page within the education site and will not function unless your computer is already connected to the Internet.)

Simulations California Scotland The resources above are web-based interactive video presentations showing BP’s initiatives in new technologies for generating electricity. These two simulations provide teachers with short videos showing the proposed development of alternative technologies for power generation - with each video illustrating a different aspect of the process. (Note: The slide images above are linked to pages within the education site and will not function unless your computer is already connected to the Internet.) Scotland Students can click through the proposed decarbonization facility in development in both Scotland and Carson, California to learn about the interaction of systems and new technologies

Videos of Energy Technologies Videos help students understand the sequence of how technologies work Includes audio-visual text for Universal Access Videos include topics such as: Solar (how PV Cells work) Wind (how turbines work) Natural Gas Hydrogen The site also includes a number of brief video resources showing the science behind specific energy technologies (photovoltaic cells, wind turbines, etc.) work to generate electricity.

Calculators Interactive calculators can help students understand the scale and relationships between and among various measurements (dimensional analysis). Resources on the site include interactive calculators to help students become more familiar with units of measurement commonly used to describe energy resources (e.g. barrels of oil, British thermal units, etc.).

Interactive / Customizable Graphs Students can create custom charts and tables showing the energy types, regions and timeframes that interest them. Charts can be exported for use in presentations and reports. Rather than spending time helping students draw the graph or chart and plot the points, this tool allows the teacher to focus students on critical thinking related to interpretation of the data. The site includes resources to allow students to create customized graphs and charts describing energy use and/or available resources by geographical area of the world over time. In addition, the information in the charts can be exported into tables for presentations and reports, or to help students learn how to use other methods for data representation and analysis.

Board Games Technology-based or traditional board game Pictures, stories and glossaries for universal access Include topics such as: Human energy Optics Electricity renewable / nonrenewable energy Conservation of the environment Sound / vibration Force and motion Some of the resources include web-based interactive games such as the one illustrated above and on the following slide. The slide image above is linked to a sample of the actual game that can be ordered online. Other games are available to download or to play online. Try clicking on the cards on the left, or the spinner to see a sample of the online version of the game. In addition to education resources developed by BP, the education portal provides links to energy resources developed with the UK (United Kingdom) science museum.

Energy DVDs Energy for the World is a series of DVDs (each 15 minutes in length) on: Oil and gas formation Refining and products from oil Renewable energy Teacher notes include a script of the DVDs with: Discussion questions Hands-on demonstrations Student research ideas Some resources on the site are available for purchase, such as Energy DVDs. Each 15 minute DVD includes presentation and classroom resources for educators.

Data Tables and Charts Downloadable data tables on the location, production, consumption, and pricing of various sources of energy are available, including: Oil Natural Gas Coal Nuclear Energy Hydroelectricity Primary Energy Renewables Electricity For student research projects or background information, downloadable data tables are available for energy resources.

Leaflets and Booklets Downloadable leaflets and booklets include topics such as: The Greenhouse Effect Climate Change Careers in Engineering Fossil Fuels Natural Gas, LNG Background on BP, the Company Informational leaflets and booklets are available for download or for purchase. These resources can be used to communicate with parents, or as background information for students.
