Today’s agenda Blended Learning for better teaching and learning Social media there to be used but Moodle is the source of Assessment Truth Hands on guidance to Mastering: – Marking guides – Quiz – Lesson – Feedback

Resources for today

Blended Learning Modes Face to Face Face to Face Self Paced Self Paced Online Facilitated Online Facilitated Workplace supervision And Assessment Workplace supervision And Assessment

Blended Learning Modes The idea behind blended learning is that we review a learning program, chunk it into lessons, and determine the best medium to deliver those lessons to the learner. Various media include, but are not limited to, technologies such as: Traditional classroom or lab settings Reading assignments Performance support tools Video conferencing Self-paced training Virtual training

Marking Guides in Moodle Used in Assignments -For each marking criterion, a comment explains what is being sought, and provides a maximum mark that can be awarded. -You can allow students to view the marking guide before they submit, so that they know what their learning priorities are in relation to this assignment. -You need to set the passing mark.

Rubrics in Moodle -Rubric has preset levels for each criterion that the teacher can select from when marking that criterion. -Marking guide lets you enter a number as the grade for a criterion – -Marking guide also lets you build a set of frequently used comments to use when marking.

Rubrics v Marking Guides

Set up and Assessment Task Go to Advanced marking Set up Marking Guide Make available to student Set passing mark in Gradebook Activity – Marking Guide

Quizzes in Moodle Quiz allows the teacher to design and build quizzes consisting of a large variety of Question types, including multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions. These questions are kept in Question bank categories and can be re-used in different quizzes in other Wodonga TAFE Moodle shells or given as a sub set to students randomly

Tend to be knowledge retrieval Align to required knowledge in work context Put comprehension questions in context Make a sub set of questions reflecting workplace process Mix up types (MC, T or F, Matching, Short answer, cloze) Ask less questions & focus on good distracters Attempts, Feedback and randomisation Writing Quizzes

Quizzes in Moodle

Set up 3 question banks with 4 questions each Set up a Quiz Add to the Quiz 2 questions from each bank to be drawn randomly Test Activity – Quizzes

Lesson in Moodle The lesson module presents a series of HTML pages to the student who is usually asked to make some sort of choice underneath the content area. The choice will send them to a specific page in the Lesson. Teachers can break linear content by adding decision points or quizzes along the lesson path.

Feedback in Moodle -You can create and conduct surveys to collect feedback. Unlike the Quiz tool, you can create non-graded questions -Flexible survey tool that can be used for formative assessment. -Responses can be anonymous and tracked using visual reports.

Create a short formative assessment quiz Make feedback anonymous Set a landing page Test Explore the reports Activity – Feedback

Take aways “teaching quality is paramount” “external tools are great for discussions but we can’t track them” “all assessment evidence needs to be captured inside Moodle” “good assessment is not over assessment but mapped assessment”
