Inside a Cell Harvard Biovisions Inner Life of a Cell Inner Life of a Cell Cells are not static like the models/drawings/images we see. They are very active and they require a lot of cellular energy in the form of ATP from the mitochondria to keep up this activity!

Reminders Final Draft is past due!! Must be submitted to turnitin.com Check the webpage if you are absent! Eaves Second Period students, do not purchase a ticket for the play during school on Fri, You MUST be in class. Rough Draft of your Research plan is due on notebook paper or typed by 10/24 (page 7) Start working on your Science Fair Laboratory Composition Notebook. Follow the instructions in your Science Fair packet carefully. It tells you exactly what to do and how to do it. (Page 8) District Nine Week Exam is on Tuesday, Review your interactive science notebook and print out the old study guides with answers from the class website.

District Nine Week Exam is on Tuesday, : Review your interactive science notebook a few minutes each day. Print out the old study guides with answers from the class website. Review the power points posted to our class website Quiz yourself or have someone quiz you Make flash cards Come up with memory devices such as: hypOtonic solutions cause cells to swell. And of course…study the review you picked up at the door yesterday. Band students who are out 5 th -7 th ……come during your band class on Wednesday to make up the exam.

Today’s Objective: Review: Scientific Method, Ecology, Evolutionary Biochemistry, & Cells for the nine week Exam tomorrow

Quick Journal Review Question 1. Please describe each type of symbiosis and give an example: commensalism, mutualism and parasitism

Quick Notes Biomolecules- organelles- cells- tissues- organs- organ systems- organisms- populations- communities- ecosystems- biomes- biosphere The biomolecules that make up cells are: Carbohydrates made up of monosaccharides such as glucose --Give you quick energy Proteins made up of amino acids -- Gives structure, transports nutrients, speeds up reactions Lipids (fats) made up of fatty acids and glycerol --Gives you Long lasting energy Nucleic Acids (DNA & RNA) made up of nucelotides --Makes your DNA and RNA -- Contains elements CHONP Protein enzymes can break these large biomolecules down into what they are made up of. This is what happens during the digestion of your food.

Good Luck Today Good Luck Today Make sure you picked up a scan-tron at the door Put your review in the tray Put your Science Journal on Table 6 NOW Make sure you have a number 2 pencil Fill out the scan-tron: Name - print first and last Date- 10/16/14 Subject- Cells Period - Test NO – Subject- Cells Period - Test NO – You have the entire period to finish the exam BUT, you MUST finish during this class period. Watch your time! We have to practice timed tests since we are PreAP and AP exams are timed. Be sure to put your test and scan-tron in the correct stack when you turn them in. Check to see if your Science Journal has been graded **Nine week exam is Tuesday. STUDY old study guides. Go to our website and get them. 10/16/14

1 st period please bring packing tape &glue sticks 2 nd period please bring Sanitizer & scotch tape 5 th period please bring Box of Gloves & glue sticks 6 th period please bring tissues & scotch tape 7 th period please bring map pencils and crayons and glue sticks

QUIZ Clear your desks of everything Do NOT write on the quiz please Use CAPITAL letters please Keep your answers covered If you need to make up a quiz due to an absence… let me know Flip it over when you are finished and hang on to it.

Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. They are called catalysts. They are very important in cellular metabolism. For example: Cells natural produce hydrogen peroxide….a poison. Enzyme in your cells quickly convert the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Enzymes are not used up in a chemical reaction. They are recycled. The substance they bind to is called the substrate (example above would be hydrogen peroxide) Enzymes lower the activation energy required to get a reaction going. Quick Notes

Proteins are made up of amino acids (amino acids are the monomers that make up proteins). Proteins can be found in the cell membrane. Some proteins are enzymes (catalysts). Lipids are fats. They are a major part of cell membranes. We get proteins, lipids and carbohydrates in our diets. Lipids contain the most energy.

DNA is found in the nucleus of Eukaryotes and is the genetic material that codes for the proteins. DNA contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous atoms.

Quick question 1.Predict what type of cell would need a lot of Golgi Bodies 2.Compare and contrast diffusion and facilitated diffusion.
