Highland East Band Welcome!! Dream big Start here!

23 Angie Taylor, Band Director This is my TWENTY THIRD year to teach band!! I grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. I went to East Central University in Ada. I taught in Ada before coming to Moore. I’ve been in Moore since 1998 and hope to spend the rest of my career at Highland East Junior High! In 2013 I was the Highland East Teacher Of The Year. My main instrument is French Horn. My hobbies are……band.

Can I be in band and football or another sport at the same time? YES! Each year we have many students that do several sports and band at the same time.

Is it too late to enroll in band? Just contact the counseling center at Highland East and let them know. It’s that easy!

Do I need to purchase an instrument right away? \ Not yet. We will start with instruments about a week into school. The band staff will guide students through the process of selecting an appropriate instrument. Renting an instrument through a local music store is VERY easy. If you switch instruments, the money you’ve already paid applies to the new instrument!

What if I can’t afford an instrument? We will help you find an instrument! If you child wants to be in band, we will find a way for him/her to participate! Local music stores have rental plans for $20-30 per month! If you change instruments later, the money you’ve paid applies to the next instrument! We have a small number of school-owned instruments (large instruments especially!) available. If you still need financial assistance, please contact the director. We will not limit participation due to financial hardship!

What if I want to play percussion? We will interview students for percussion auditions beginning the first day of school! Due to the popularity of percussion and responsibility required, we will contact your elementary music teacher for a reference. Exceptional grades are vital too! Also, because of the keyboard instruments (such as xylophone, marimba, and bells) a piano background is very helpful.

What if I don’t know how to read music? That’s normal and definitely not a problem! We start at the beginning level and teach you everything you need to know!

What if I have a question for the band director? Check the HEJH website first!! Voic

Is there a band website? YES!YES!YES! HEJH Band Website Check it often for updates!

And finally, kids… You are going to have the best year ever… At the best school ever… With the best teachers ever… Your life will change this year… And it will be AMAZING!
