Prescription Drug Abuse Ashley Grubbs Senior Graduation Project Spring 2012

Thesis of My Paper  Prescription drug abuse is growing in the United States even with new regulations and laws.  People of different age, race, culture, and social class are abusers of prescription drugs, not just one specific group of people.

Paper Topics  History of prescription drug abuse.  The growing trend  Harmful effects  Ease of accessibility  New laws and regulations/ programs against substance abuse

Island Pharmacy  I job shadowed pharmacist Kevin Phillips in order to view the daily transactions that occur at a pharmacy. I was able to see the large number of prescriptions that were filled, and learned about the programs that are used in order to prevent “pharmacy hopping”.

Dare CASA  Amber Bodner at Dare CASA talked with me about the substance abuse demographics in Dare County. I received information about programs in Dare County that are available for people to educate themselves as well as law enforced programs that aim to prevent substance abuse.

Information Gap?  My product does fill an information gap because many people may not be aware of the harmful effects of abusing prescription drugs. My product can be used to inform students in schools of the consequences of using prescription drugs.

My Product  an informational packet that can be used to inform students and/or adults of…  the severity of prescription drug abuse.  the increase  new issues

 Prescription Drug Deaths  Total 300% more than all other illegal drugs and alcohol combined  “Skittle Parties” Urban Dictionary: where you dump a mass amount of pills into a bowl at a party and eat them like skittles
