Requirements of PBB-TE Segment Protection for Consideration Ao Wei Wu March 2009

Contents Background review Requirements of PBB-TE segment protection Conclusion

Background review* Some definitions –TESI protection: e2e protection in P802.1Qay –TESI segment protection: protect portion of a TESI bounded by a PNP at each end –Infrastructure segment protection: link or node physical protection in the protected PBB-TE segment Primary TESI segment Backup TESI segment

Background review* FDB entry loss/destruction/configuration error –Lead to traffic loss of certain TESIs –Infrastructure segment protection can not detect such failure. One solution : e2e TESI protection + infrastructure segment protection –blind switch to inactive segment –Unnecessary traffic loss for a manual switch * >

Requirement of TESI segment protection e2e TESI protection + infrastructure segment protection + TESI segment protection TESI segment protection may apply to –PtMP TESI protection –Load sharing 1:1 PBB-TE segment protection M:1 PBB-TE segment protection

PtMP TESI protection –TESI segments are used to protect the PtMP TESI 1 2 3

Load sharing Load sharing in 1:1 segment protection –TESI1 and TESI2 flow through the primary segment –Switch one of the TESI segment from primary TESI segment to backup TESI segment to share the load

Load sharing (contd) Load sharing in M:1 segment protection –When primary segment fails, different TESI segments switch to different backup TESI segments for load sharing according to the priority

Joint Segment Primary segment and backup segment have a joint node D (may have more than one joint nodes) in this segment protection domain. When segment switching occurs, only nodes B and F switch the traffic. Node D neednt be aware of the switching. Disjoint restriction is not necessary. If the segment domain is divided into two segment domains on the joint node, the joint node has to support more functions (e.g. MEP) Primary TESI Backup TESI

Conclusion PBB-TE segment protection –Should support TESI segment protection TESI segment protection –Protect portion of TESI on PBB-TE segment –1:1 and M:1 TESI segment protection –Load sharing Joint segment –Primary segment has one or more joint nodes with backup segment
