Spatial Inequality The unequal distribution of wealth or resources in a geographic area, so that some places are richer than others

Poor House in Detroit These kinds of run down houses are very common in Detroit. Usually they belong to people who work low paying jobs, and are in the lower class. They usually don’t have good utilities or maintenance.

A Wealthy Home in Detroit These kinds of homes belong to the upper class people, or the “haves”. These people have high paying jobs, and are wealthy. These homes have good utilities and maintenance.

A Poor Home in Mexico City Usually the poorest people in Mexico City are recent migrants. They often live in slums, or poor houses, on the edge of the city. Most of these slums are one room houses with no electricity and no running water. They are usually made of cardboard and scraps of metal. The streets are typically dirt roads with trash littered everywhere. People who live here typically have no jobs. There are also people who are “working poor” which means they are paid little to nothing for their work.

A Wealthy Home in Mexico City This is an example of a “have home” in Mexico City, as in they have the necessities and a little extra. This house belongs to a wealthy, middle, or upper class person. They are usually owners of large land or leaders in business or government. They enjoy a luxurious standard of living. Many live in large estates and can afford maids, gardeners, butlers, and drivers who are usually the working poor. Running water and electricity are common utilities in these homes.
