The Hopeless Heart KATHERINE MORALES PERIOD:02

Love- a broken heart Love presents itself in many different forms and is found in many different places. Love is sometimes happy and full of joy but this is not always the case.  A broken Heart- The result of love that ended tragically, or the result of unrequited love. “A Storm is coming”

First Poem Explanation (page 5) Love- a Broken heart  Summary: A person “ cancel[ing] [his] vows,” and giving up on his love.  The speaker is a man who has given up on his love and is “ glad ” to finally be “ free ” of this heart breaking love.  Thematic quotes: “Nay, I have done, you get no more of me,” “That thus so cleanly I myself can free;/ Shake hands for ever, cancel all our vows,”

Love- A broken Heart First poem Part 2 o Michael Drayton overuses commas to highlight the speaker’s thought process which portrays that the speaker is saying what he is thinking and feeling at the moment towards the ending relationship. o The author also utilizes personification to emphasize the importance of “ Passion ” “ Innocence ” and “ Faith ” in a relationship and to display the lack of these qualities in the speaker’s relationship. o Tone - Hopelessness yet relief; The speaker has given up on his love because he is tired of being broken hearted but is relieved to finally be free of her shackles of pain.

Second Poem (Page 3) Love- A broken heart  Summary: A heartbroken woman calling out for help from the love’s “ endless torments.”  The speaker is a woman who wants to give up on her love/relationship because it is causing her so much “ sad pain ” and she is asking if the pain will ever end.  Thematic quotes: “ How long will you delight in my sad pain?/Will never Love your favour more express?” “ O quickly end, and do not long debate/ My needful aid, lest help do come too late.”

Love- A broken heart Second Poem Part 2 o Lady Mary Wroth overuses questions to exude the hopelessness and sorrow that the speaker feels. o The author utilizes a contradiction to differentiate between what the speaker’s “sad pain” and the “delight” that the speaker assumes that the subject feels when watching her (the speaker) suffer. o Tone – Sorrow, hopelessness, and resignation; The speaker feels so much pain over this love and is tired of feeling this terrible pain. She has accepted that the love is hopeless and full of pain but still has not given up yet. It weighs so much but I can do it! Do you even care that this is hurting you??

Comparison Love- A broken heart Sonnet 61 Sonnet 61 is a man’s feeling towards the ending of his relationship. It shows that the speaker has given up and feels free of all the pain. Sonnet 11 Sonnet 11 is a woman conveying her pain and sorrow and accepting the hopelessness of the situation. Although she accepts the hopelessness of it she has not let go of the love or given up on the love yet.

The End
