Bell Ringer: enterprise immunity Atlantic slave trade After I got sick and had the flu, I developed an _________ so I did not have to worry about getting that same flu again. Please write down the sentence and identify the vocabulary word. The slave trade between Europe and Africa was a large ____________ that made a lot of people wealthy. The ______________________ was the buying and selling of Africans for work in the Americas.

A review… So far we have covered… Section 1: Spain Builds an American Empire Columbus searches for a trade route in the West Indies Columbus thinks he’s found the West Indies, names the locals “los indios” but is really on an island in the Caribbean Cortes (Spanish) conquers the Aztec in Central America Pizzaro (Spanish) conquers the Inca in South America

Section 2: European Nations Settle North America The French and Dutch settlers primarily (mostly) want gold and to trade. The Natives do not view them as a threat. They mostly have a friendly relationship. The English settle in North America to start a new life and have religious freedom. The English and Natives do not get along. They are always at war and finally the English defeat the Natives. The European’s bring over the “invisible warrior” (disease) and almost 90% of the Natives die. The Natives were a source of labor for the Europeans, so they would have to look somewhere else for labor. (Africa: slaves)

Section 3: The Atlantic Slave Trade Causes of Slavery: Slavery existed in Africa for hundreds of years. In the 17 th century (1600’s) Islam spread to Africa and slavery increased. Muslims transported about 17 million Africans to the Muslim lands of North Africa and Southwest Asia. Muslim’s believed it was ok to enslave non-believers

In the Americas, the Natives were dying by the millions because of diseases that the Europeans brought. (invisible warrior!) Europeans saw advantages to using Africans in the Americas: 1.Many Africans had been exposed to European diseases already and had an immunity. 2.Many Africans had experience in farming 3.Less likely to escape; they were in an unknown place. 4.Skin color made it easier to catch them if they escaped.

Atlantic slave trade: The buying and selling of Africans for work in the Americas. Between (the 16 th and 17 th centuries) nearly 300,000 Africans were sold to the Americas. 1870: By time the Atlantic slave trade ended, about 9.5 millions Africans were sold to the Americas. The Spanish and Portuguese were the first major groups to bring Africans to the Americas. The next group would be the English.

In total, almost 400,000 African slaves were sold to Britain’s North American colonies. By 1830 almost 2 million slaves worked the land in the United States. What year did the United States become a country? 1776!

African rulers Europeans Africans African rulers connected Europeans with the Africans… … in exchange for gold, guns, and goods.

Journal Reflection: Do you think the United States would have developed as quickly without the help of the slaves? Why or why not?
