What do you think the plague did to Europe……  Economically?  Socially?  Politically?  Religiously?

Causes and Effects of The Plague  The rats and unsanitary conditions during the Middle Ages CAUSED the Bubonic Plague (Black Plague) to break out and spread.  The EFFECTS of this disease killed 25% of the population.  The EFFECTS of losing such a large percentage of its population CAUSED Europe to go through many changes in the coming years.

One of the Major Effects  People began questioning the church, which had always told them that they needed to endure suffering and hardship IN ORDER TO get rewarded in heaven, AND………..  They had ALREADY suffered enough JUST BY LIVING, and they didn’t understand why they had to watch so many people die a horrible death in order to get into heaven.

Cause and Effect of Feudalism  Feudalism was based on a caste system:  The King ruled over the lands.  The King gave land to his Nobles.  The Nobles gave plots of land to Lords.  The Lords had Peasants work the land in exchange for food and housing. THIS SYSTEM WAS KNOW AS FEUDALISM.

MAJOR EFFECTS  In this system, there was no opportunity to EVER change or advance one’s social status.  People began looking elsewhere for answers.  They looked back at the Greeks and Romans (Classical) past.

THERE WAS A REBIRTH OF IDEAS  THE RENAISSANCE  Began in Italy  Took awhile to move North because England and France were in war.

There were huge cities in Northern Italy, SO…………….  GOOD NEWS  BAD NEWS
