Beyond High School: Tutorial Slides for Unit 1 My Career and Life Plan

Action Planning for YOUR Future

Where do I want to go? How do I get there? What do I need to take along? Who can help me? Constructing and navigating the road to your future Planning for life after high school can be like planning a big road trip……

Im at the center of my life. Plan nothing about me without me! Person-Centered Planning

Whose life is it, anyway? (my trip, my goals) What do I want to see? (interests and preferences) Planning the Journey (roadmap) Getting Direct Skill Instruction to get where you want to go (driving the car) Obeying the rules of the road (social skills) Who will I share the scenery with? (my circle of friends / living & leisure) What if I need service or help along the way? (supports) How am I going to pay for all this? (economics of living)

Transition Planning Building and crossing your bridge to your future

What is transition planning? Transition (noun) 1. movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage, subject, concept, etc., to another; 2. change: the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Transition Planning - Making and carrying out a very intentional plan for the change to your adult life in the areas of living, working and post–high school learning.

What is Transition Planning in High School? Outcome-oriented process focusing on what is needed for adult life functioning. Includes a coordinated set of activities, provided to the student by the school and sometimes other agencies, to promote a successful transition from high school to postsecondary education or employment, and independent living.

Three Parts to Being in Charge of Your Transition-- Self Awareness Self Determination System Awareness An Ideal High School Outcome: You eventually run your own IEP Meetings with your teachers, parents and agencies as your partners. You know what you need to meet your career / life goals and how to get what you need to be successful.

Knowledge is Power! Find out what skills are needed for work, adult learning and independent living Find out your level of those skills Find out how you can build skills and make a good match of your skills and life options in the areas of earning, learning and living.

Designing a life- Starting with Self Awareness – work with your parents and teachers to assess your skills, strengths and needs. Make a plan to build on your strengths and work on your needs.
