The Teen Years Chapter 22

Changes During the Teen Years The basis of healthy relationships with others rests on how you feel about yourself. Self-image is the way you see and feel about yourself. A person with a positive self- image usually accepts responsibility for his/her actions and is open to learning new things.

Building Your Future Planning for the future is important. ◦ Purpose ◦ Direction Each decision you make has its consequences, the results or effects of your actions. ◦ Making responsible decisions is as important as setting goals. Define your values. ◦ Values are beliefs and ideas about what is important.  What is right, good, and desirable?  Learned from family, friends, school, religion, and others you admire.

Building Your Future Life skills are abilities you can learn that will help you live a successful life. ◦ You are currently learning how to define your values, set goals, and make good decisions.  The more good decisions you make, the easier it is to make a good decision the next time. ◦ You are also learning how to develop healthy relationship and dating skills.  Social skills - Respect yourself and others - Using refusal skills to avoid risk behaviors ◦ Refusal Skills (S.T.O.P.) Say no in a firm voice. Tell why not. Offer another idea. Promptly leave.

Your Changing Body Adolescence is the stage of life between childhood and adulthood. ◦ Begins between age ◦ This is a time of great growth and change. Hormones are chemical substances produced in certain glands in the body. ◦ The release of the hormones and the resulting changes prepare your body for adulthood. ◦ The affects are physical, mental, emotional, and social. ◦ Talk to a trusted adult if you are concerned or confused.
