Why obtain Energy Efficiency Accreditation? To comply with SE and NAS Environmental Policy To save energy Conserve resources Minimise the impact our business has on the environment And as a consequence to attempt to make financial savings for the benefit of the department And as a consequence to attempt to make financial savings for the benefit of the department

How did we achieve accreditation? Review what we do in NAS To comply with Policy Consider what could be done better List both positive and negative items to show where we did or did not comply Identify where improvements should be made

List of items reviewed Property Property Energy Contracts Energy Contracts Transport Transport Waste disposal and recycling Waste disposal and recycling Maintenance contracts with consultants and contractors Maintenance contracts with consultants and contractors Staff awareness Staff awareness

What action was considered Property  Energy audits were undertaken and the results considered.  Presence detectors were fitted within toilets and other rooms.  Energy saving fittings installed within toilets to save water and electrical fittings upgraded as and when they required replacement  Secondary glazing was fitted at GRH  All new or refurbishment work now includes energy saving measures in the design.

What action was considered Energy Contracts - Gas, electricity and water We reviewed our existing contracts and joined in with the SE Family of contracts to gain the benefits from, Energy savingsEnergy savings The increased scale of the electricity and gas contracts a better price was achieved. The increased scale of the electricity and gas contracts a better price was achieved. Water saver devices were fitted.Water saver devices were fitted. Water meters sizes were reviewed and where appropriate new meters were fittedWater meters sizes were reviewed and where appropriate new meters were fitted

What action was considered Transport We reviewed staff and visitors travel to our buildings as well as the provision of our daily van service, as a result we considered,  more search room spaces at GRH which is easily reached by public transport  Bike bins at GRH so that staff and visitors could lock their bicycles away safely  Although no action has been taken at this time with respect of our van. When the van is changed we are considering replacing it with which will run on LPG fuel.  When hire cars are required alternative fuels such as diesel and lowering the cc rating is considered

What action was considered Waste disposal and recycling  We reviewed our contracts with regard to Re-cycling and put contracts in place to cope with disposal and recycling as much waste as possible such as toner cartridges, paper etc.  Maintenance contractors were charged with a similar obligations for safe disposal and recycling

What action was considered Maintenance Contracts Consultants were charged with incorporating Energy Efficiency measures within their designs and when dealing with maintenance. What action was considered Staff Awareness This is perhaps the most difficult item as staff generally see no advantage in switching off unnecessary lights or turning down heating. What we did was to provided them with, a talk on how they could save money at home and at the same time save the planet a talk on how they could save money at home and at the same time save the planet make them more aware by drip feeding them with a series of posters and energy conservation reports via the intranet make them more aware by drip feeding them with a series of posters and energy conservation reports via the intranet Encourage them to switch off unnecessary lights and heating Encourage them to switch off unnecessary lights and heating and to report any defects in their heating, lighting or water supply and to report any defects in their heating, lighting or water supply

STAFF AWARENESS INFORMATION Global Warming CO 2 is a harmful by-product of burning fossil fuels in the generation of energy. HOW DID WE ACHIEVE ENERGY ACCREDITATION? With a great deal of hard work trying to convince our maintenance consultant, contractors and more particularly our staff that we were deadly serious about achieving this excellence award. Now we have to keep it
