Agenda Welcome Common Core State Standards Instructional Shifts Math Instruction GO Math! Understanding Mathematics Together Questions?

Common Core State Standards The Common Core State Standards provide a clear picture of what students need to learn each year (K-12; Pre K-12 in NYS) in order to graduate from high school ready to succeed in college and careers. A mile wide and an inch deep v. an inch wide and a mile deep CCSS vs. CCLS

Instructional Shifts The Common Core pushes us to make changes in the way we teach mathematics. – Focus – learn more about fewer topics – Coherence – keep building on what you learn within a grade and from grade to grade – Rigor Fluency – work with speed and accuracy Deep Understanding – Know it, do it Application – real world Deep – think fast and solve problems

Math Instruction Teachers work hard to plan for and teach the students in front of them. These teachers understand that GO Math is a program they use to teach math. They are also welcome to supplement with other resources and be creative to reach the diverse learners in their classrooms.

GO Math! GO Math is a program published for the Common Core by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Every lesson offers online, assessment, practice, differentiation, and problem-solving options for students. In line with the depth of thinking the Common Core requires, there are performance tasks in every chapter.

How can you help at home? Know what the priority work is for your child’s grade Know your child’s strengths and weaknesses with math and support your child with his/her gaps Work with your child to memorize all the facts that are expected for his/her grade Know whether your child really understands the math; ask “Is your answer reasonable?” “Does your answer match the question?” Spend enough time on math at home to develop understanding (vs. completing work) Show your children math in the “real world” GO Math! parent support:

Fluency Kindergarten – Add/subtract within 5 First Grade – Add/subtract within 10 Second Grade – Add/subtract within 20 – Add/subtract within 100 (with pencil/paper and algorithms) Third Grade – Multiply/divide within 100 – Add/subtract within 1000 Fourth Grade – Add/subtract within 1,000,000 Fifth Grade – Multi-digit multiplication

Understanding Mathematics Together One performance task per grade Think about: 1.What stands out to you? 2.What is the math your child has to know and be able to do to be successful with this problem? 3.How is this experience the same and different from traditional mathematics instruction?

Do you have any questions? Have a wonderful evening!
