Children develop at different rates. The onus is on developing mathematical understanding, a feel for number, NOT just learning a mechanical method that is prone to error – to develop learners for life. Calculators are a completely acceptable tool. The skill is understanding when it is appropriate to use them and being confident that there is a written method that could have been used instead. They’re also useful for checking for errors.
