Multiplication methods
Multiplying Multiplication is mainly taught in three ways - the grid method, Chinese multiplication and traditional column method. The Grid Method involves breaking the number up into hundreds, tens, units etc. Multiplying them together and then adding the answers. E.g. : 34 x 65 Break the 34 into 30 and 4, 30 4 similarly break 65 into 60 and
Next….. …. multiply the numbers together ( e.g. 30 x 60 = 1800) 3 x 6 = 18, then add 2 zeros finally add the answers
Chinese multiplication is set out similarly to the grid method but it has the bonus of never having to multiply numbers higher than 9x E.g. 34 x 65 Multiply the numbers together, placing the tens above the diagonal line and units underneath
Next….. …... add together the numbers on the diagonals So, 34 x 65 = 2210
Or the more traditional column method can be used First multiply the 34 by x Then multiply the 34 by 60, this can be done by adding a 0 and multiplying by x Finally add the two answers 3 4 x
