1 2 6 Formal Division How can we teach this for understanding? How important is it to teach for understanding? But, how many groups of 5 in 126? The array starts to get a bit big!

5 1 2 6 H T U Here’s the number represented with place value counters. The divisor is 5, so we are trying to find out how many groups of 5 there are in 126. We must remember, we can only work with hundred counters in the hundreds column, tens counters in the tens column, and so on. These are my slides, which arose out of our thinking last time, but they are similar in approach to NCETM’s presentation

5 1 2 6 H T U How many groups of 5 can we make in the hundreds column? We can’t make any, so we will exchange the hundred counter for 10 tens counters.

H T U 5 1 2 6 1 How many groups of 5 can we make in the tens column?

2 5 1 2 6 H T U We can make 2 groups of 5, with 2 left over. We’ll now exchange the 2 extra tens counters for 20 ones counters

2 5 1 2 6 H T U How many groups of 5 can we make in the units column?

H T U 2 5 r1 5 1 2 6 We can make 5 groups of 5, with 1 remaining.
