Purpose of the examination : To assess pupils’ attainment in Mathematics at the end of primary education with respect to the objectives of the primary mathematics curriculum.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Assessment Objectives: - recall specific mathematical facts, concepts, rules and formulae, and perform straightforward computations (Knowledge). - interpret data and use mathematical concepts, rules and formulae and solve routine or familiar mathematical problems. (Comprehension) - analyse data and/or apply mathematical concepts, rules and formulae in a complex situation, and solve unfamiliar problems. (Application & Analysis) Pupils should be able to :

The use of calculators is allowed.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Item Types : Multiple-choice Question For each question, four options are provided of which only one is the correct answer. The 1-mark MCQ will be straightforward questions that assess the basic concepts and skills of the Primary Mathematics syllabus.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Item Types: 1-mark Short-answer Question For each answer, a candidate has to write his answer in the answer space provided. Marks are awarded for correct answers. Any unit required in an answer is provided and a candidate has to give his answer in that unit. The 1-mark SAQ will be straightforward questions that assess the basic concepts and skills of the Primary Mathematics syllabus

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Item Types: 2-mark Short-answer Question For each question, a candidate has to write his answer in the answer space provided. Marks are awarded as follows : - 2 marks are awarded if the correct answer is given. - If an incorrect answer is given, 1 mark is awarded for the correct method or working shown. - No marks awarded if method is wrong. Any unit required in an answer is provided and a candidate has to give his answer in that unit.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Item Types: Structured / Long-answer Question : For each question, a candidate has to show his method of solution ( working steps ) clearly and write his answer (s) in the space (s) provided. Marks deducted : for omission of units of measurement eg. $, cm, %, etc and wrong mathematical statements, eg 20% = 40 one-fifth = 3 girls 4 x 4 = $16 2/5 x 100 = 40%

Assessment Objectives: - to recall specific mathematical facts, concepts, rules and formulae, and perform straightforward computations (Knowledge). - to interpret data and use mathematical concepts, rules and formulae and solve routine or familiar mathematical problems. (Comprehension) - apply mathematical concepts and skills in simple situations, which may require processing of information (Application ) Pupils should be able to :

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Item Types: Multiple-choice Question For each question, four options are provided of which only one is the correct answer. The MCQ will assess basic concepts and skills. Questions will generally be short, simple and straightforward in nature.

Preparation for PSLE Semester One : 1.Target setting. 2.Supplementary lessons. 3.Pulling out of students during curriculum time. 4.Extra remedial lessons to narrow gaps. 5.Practice other schools’ exam papers. 6.Regular topical tests and follow up remediation 7.Bridging of learning gaps from P5 content. 8.PSLE Booster – holiday lessons (March, last week of June holidays ) 9. Motivational sessions 10.“Math Help Programme” by ex-pupils 11.“Parents For Math” Programme by parents

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Preparation for PSLE Semester Two 1. Extra remedial class for pupils who failed in SA More Section A and B questions for practice. 3. Mock exam 4. Peer tutoring for those who scored below 40 marks. 5. Use of Friday mornings (CCA time) for the 4 subjects. 6. Use of practice papers to teach more problem solving heuristics 7. Supplementary lessons during the September holidays 8. Math Intensive Programme – taken by Math teachers 4 mornings a week.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Concerns after CA 1 : 1.Pupils made mistakes in 4 operations, conversion and use of data from questions. 2.They were still weak in higher order questions on percentage and ratio especially those involving percentage of percentage, base for percentage and changed ratio. 3.Not all pupils are competent in the use of model drawing to solve questions of average difficulty level. 4.Some concepts taught in previous years were forgotten eg fraction, division and basic concepts of ratio and percentage, decimals.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Parents’ Important Role 1.Practice all the questions in Textbooks. 2.Go through the workbook exercises and corrections again. (P5 & 6) 3.Do all practice papers and written assignments given seriously, not to leave blanks even if their answers are wrong. 4.Help your child to practice the easy sums without calculator. 5.Go through targets and plan out activities and strategies to achieve these targets. 6.Motivate and encourage your child. 7.Do topical revision for your child if he is weak so that he can experience small measures of success.

River Valley Primary School – Strive for the Best Exam Tips 1. Have sufficient rest so that they can think better. 2. Pupils to check their answers using substitution or working backwards. 3.Do practice papers at exam sitting ie at 8.15 am in the morning, with no food provided. 4.Pupils to highlight important information or data in questions. 5.Pupils to “ask” questions about the data in the problem sums – write this information. 6.Convince pupils not to dwell too long on questions that they cannot do such that they have no time to finish easier sums.
