EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 Timing of Deliverables

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 Grid Deployment Group Ian Bird Group Manager (30) CT GIS EIS Certification Operations Integration Zdenek (10/10) Markus (8/12) ? (3/5) EGEE: +0 EGEE: +4 EGEE: +2 Alistair Manager without portfolio! - All of the people recruited for EGEE are new to CERN. - All have now started (I think). - The SA1/EGEE part at CERN is quite small (about 7 people). - There are other resources at CERN such as the PO. - An important part of SA1 at CERN is to use the other resources at CERN.

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 CERN view of SA1 Ian Activity Manager CIC management ROC Management OMC management (?) (Alistair) (?) CERN CIC - CERN OMC 4 CICs 9 ROCs - 40 RCs

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 What have I done so far (in five weeks)? Reviewed the execution plan Written the first draft of the quality plan Assembled a prototype database of project information Attended meetings in Cork and Edinburgh Started getting the documentation infrastructure in place Started managing the ROC group Had a week’s vacation Bought a house in France Learned some more French Started jogging again

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 Project Data 300 People formally part of the project 10 Federations 70 Partners 90 Locations 10 Mailing lists 20 Web sites 4 Test beds/ services 3000 Users 30 Countries 10 ROCs 4 CICs 1 OMC 20 Administrative organisations (QAG, PEB) 100 Documents 11 Activities 9 Deliverables 5 Milestones 20 VOs 20 Apps 200 Servers (things with host certificates) 600 Grid services (things with service certificates) 10 CAs 4 Accounting nodes 20 Resource brokers 40 User interfaces 10 BDIIs 4 Middleware releases 1 Call tracking system Monthly time sheets (5 so far)

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 Access database for some parts I am thinking of implementing an Access Database containing the following tables: 300 People formally part of the project 10 Federations 70 Partners 90 Locations 10 Mailing lists 20 Web sites 4 Test beds/ services 3000 Users 30 Countries 10 ROCs 4 CICs 1 OMC 20 Administrative organisations (QAG, PEB) 100 Documents 11 Activities 9 Deliverables 5 Milestones

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 The other project data parts The VO managers can deal with the following: (?) 20 VOs 20 Apps The CAs can deal with the following: 200 Servers (things with host certificates) 600 Grid services (things with service certificates) 10 CAs The OMC will deal with the following: 4 Accounting nodes The grid information can track the following: (?) 20 Resource brokers 40 User interfaces 10 BDIIs The OMC will deal with the following: 4 Middleware releases 1 Call tracking system The PO will deal with the following: Monthly time sheets (5 so far)

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 Other activity requirements Other requirements: We also have to do other things such as: - Training people especially the RCs - Liaising with people outside especially standards people eg GGF - Collaborating with other activities in EGEE - Exhibiting when we have something to show eg in Amsterdam - Conferencing when we have something to discuss eg in Amsterdam - Papering when we go to conferences etc - Gendering especially the Gender Action Plan

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 QA Group Because SA1 is the largest activity in EGEE, we will be expected to provide aggregated (and perhaps detailed) information on just about anything. I have put into the quality plan, that we will provide information on the following: - # of users - # of apps - # of RCs - # of processors - # of TBs of disk available - # of helpdesk calls - time to close helpdesk calls - # of jobs - statistics on job success rates We have to keep the mechanisms for collecting this information simple and effective. This is easy to say, it may be difficult to implement.

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 What do I want to get from this meeting? To get to know one another better To be told: - if there are things missing from the execution plan - if there are things which you expect from CERN - if there are things which you do not expect from CERN

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 What will I do in the next 7 weeks? Complete the execution plan Complete the quality plan Complete a database of project information Avoid attend meetings in Cork and Edinburgh Get the documentation infrastructure to work Make the time sheet system work Manage the ROC group Have two weeks’ vacation Move into the house in France Learn some more French Go on jogging

EGEE, SA1 ROC Managers’ Meeting, 10 May 2004 The importance of team work Be patient with each other Say what you will do, and then do it Say what you cannot do, if you cannot do it Do not make promises you cannot keep Do not force promises out of others which they cannot keep Communicate clearly Communicate directly (do not go via others) Keep things simple Respect one another
