What is Oxygen? Oxygen is an element that is represented by the letter or symbol “O” Oxygen is a non-metal located in the Chalcogen group It has an atomic number of 8 Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe

What is the history of Oxygen? Joseph Priestley and Carl Wilhelm Scheele both independently discovered oxygen, but Priestly is the one that gets most of the credit. The name comes from the Greek words oxys and genes which together mean “acid forming”

What are some of the uses of Oxygen? Most living things need Oxygen in order to survive Impurities in molten pig iron are burned away with a streams of high pressure Oxygen to produce steel Oxygen is combined with another compound to create a very hot flame used in welding. Oxygen is also found in various forms of rocket fuel

Isotopes Oxygen occurs in nature as three different isotopes The most common of these is 16O and the most rare being 17O

Physical and Chemical Properties atomic mass of 15.9994 amu density of 1.429 g/cm3 non-metal the gas form is clear and the liquid form is a pale blue color

Why is Oxygen important? Oxygen is needed by most living organisms in order to live Oxygen makes up about 21% of Earth’s atmosphere The Ozone (O3 ) creates a thin protective layer around the earth that shields the surface from the sun's ultraviolet radiation Oxygen is a key part of Earth’s atmosphere
