Introduction Francesco Redi: Italian physician and poet. Aysha Introduction Francesco Redi: Born Feb. 1626, Arezzo, Italy Died March 1697, Pisa Italian physician and poet. Acquired a degree in medicine and philosophy from the University of Pisa. One of the first to disprove spontaneous generation. Maggots in meat came from flies’ eggs. http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/62979 http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/69208 http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/106478#279371.toc

The Problem : Spontaneous generation Marwa The Problem : Spontaneous generation Meaning: The sudden appearance of some organisms. Life naturally developed from non-living matter. Example: Maggots arose from meat. Mice from the grain. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNByRghR6sw http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/69208/media?assemblyId=143729 http://www.slideshare.net/cavalierem/biogenesis-vs-spontaneous-generation

The Problem : Redi’s Hypothesis Aysha The Problem : Redi’s Hypothesis Hypothesis: New organisms produced only by existing organisms. Redi’s question: Where do maggots come from? https://prezi.com/zocmtqhj--gc/copy-of-evolution/ http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/69208 http://www.strictlygenteel.co.uk/evolution67/evolution3.html#

Redi’s Experiment Observed: Noticed and described: Marwa Redi’s Experiment Observed: Maggots appear where flies had previously landed. Flies coming from maggots. Noticed and described: The different developmental forms of flies. Proposed a new hypothesis: Maggots came from eggs that flies laid on meat. Experiment: Putting meat into three separate jars. http://faculty.sdmiramar.edu/dtrubovitz/micro/history/Redi.html http://www.slideshare.net/cavalierem/biogenesis-vs-spontaneous-generation

Redi’s Experiment Step 3 Jar-3 Sealed No maggots developed Aysha http://faculty.sdmiramar.edu/dtrubovitz/micro/history/Redi.html http://school.eb.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/levels/high/article/69208/media?assemblyId=143729

Analysis and Theory The experiments shows: Other scientist: Theory: Marwa Analysis and Theory The experiments shows: Maggots and flies arise from living parents. Other scientist: John Needham, from England: Life had been created from nonlife. Lazzaro Spallanzani, an Italian scientist: Boiling kills any living organisms. Consequently, there were no living organisms give rise to new ones. Louis Pasteur, a French scientiste: The microorganisms reproduce and give rise to many others like themselves. Theory: Life did not arise from nonlife. http://www.strictlygenteel.co.uk/evolution67/evolution3.html# https://diogenesii.wordpress.com/tag/spontaneous-generation/ http://www.infoplease.com/cig/biology/spontaneous-generation.html#

Effect of Discovery At Redi’s time: Years later: Aysha Effect of Discovery At Redi’s time: people didn’t believe in his experiment. Years later: Pasteur insured that spontaneous generation was totally wrong by his experiment. The significance of the discovery: That there is no organism come from non-life organism https://amoebamike.wordpress.com/2009/10/06/spontaneous-generation-a-brief-history-of-disproving-it/ http://www.infoplease.com/cig/biology/spontaneous-generation.html - http://ic.galegroup.com.ezproxy.hct.ac.ae/ic/suic/ReferenceDetailsPage/ReferenceDetailsWindow?failOverType=&query=&prodId=SUIC&windowstate=normal&contentModules=&display-query=&mode=view&displayGroupName=Reference&limiter=&u=971hctnet&currPage=&disableHighlighting=false&displayGroups=&sortBy=&source=&search_within_results=&p=SUIC&action=e&catId=&activityType=&scanId=&documentId=GALE%7CCV2643450425
