What is Thalassaemia? Many disease are caused by abnormalities in the blood. These abnormalities in the blood. These abnormalities are categoried according to the part of the blood affected: there are disease of the red blood cells, the white blood cells or coagulation diseases. Thalassaemia, also known as "Cooleys Anaemia" is an inherited blood disorder which is caused by an abnormal gene. A person with Thalassaemia is unable to produce normal functioning haemoglobin in the blood. Haemoglobin are the cell that transport oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. In severe form of Thalassaemia (known as Thalassaemia Major), the person will require a lifetime of monthly blood transfusions. This is a painful and traumatic treatment regime that imposes an enormous financial and emotional strain on the patient and also on his or her family.

Thalassaemia Society (Singapore) About Us Thalassaemia Society (Singapore) was formed by a group of parents and volunteers to meet the following objectives: A. Create public awareness and disseminate relevant and the latest medical information relating to Thalassaemia. B. Provide community support and social interaction amoung Thalassaemia patients and their families. C. Provide financial aid to needy families and referral of social and welfare services.

The Thalassaemia Scoiety (Singapore) was officially registered with the Registry of Societies in December 2003 and it registered as a Charity with the Commissioner of Charities. Our Charity Regstration Number is
