A Secret to a Six showing support while keeping the prompt present

Show Technique s a lesson in writing

Show Off your Triangles Each triangle (on your plan) represents at least 3 sentences. You have to SHOW your triangle; not just tell the reader what it is about...BUT DON’T FORGET TO connect back to the prompt!!!

How do I show off?

Ways to SHOW OFF! *make up a scenario (i.e.) “For instance, what if……” Show Off your Triangles

*use a personal experience (i.e.) “I remember…” Show Off your Triangles

*use imagery to paint a mental picture (i.e.) “Rain-rotted shingles drooped over the eaves of the veranda; oak trees kept the sun away.” Show Off your Triangles

*use “compare/contrast” within your paragraph (i.e.) “Instead of rows of students sitting sleepily, listening to a monotonous teacher drone on and on about Shakespeare’s comedic techniques, JWJ students are sitting in small circles discussing the advantages of using jokes to deliver scathing social commentary. Show Off your Triangles

*use FACTS, STATS, and/or DETAILS (proper nouns) (i.e.) Shakespeare, born in Stratford in 1564, wrote over 37 plays in 25 years, not to mention 154 sonnets and 2 long, narrative poems. Show Off your Triangles

Let’s look at an example… WHO SHOULD BE FEATURED ON THE NEXT US POSTAGE STAMP?

Shakespeare on a Stamp Beautiful words that Led to Fame New words with plays Famous playwright whose words changed society that introduced us to

Just to Review Body Paragraphs (Structure)… Start with your TOPIC SENTENCE Topic Sentences: try and have your MAIN POINT and BOTH OF YOUR SUPPORTING POINTS… all in one sentence. This sentence needs to make sense, and NOT be a run-on. Re-read your sentence after you write it.

Topic Sentence: 1 st sentence in your body paragraph Famous Playwright Beautiful Led to Fame Shakespeare wrote plays that were so exquisitely beautiful that they led to fame in England.

What techniques are used? Sentences 2-4:(Supporting point #1 and its FEDIs) »Shakespeare’s plays were so eloquently written, that, people wonder if a single man could have possibly had the genius to construct such works of art with just a pen and paper. His plays contained elements that all the different social classes could relate to, including the Groundlings standing on the floor of the Globe Theater. He even incorporated poetry, like sonnets, into his tragedies like Romeo and Juliet. Beautiful (Supporting Pt. #1)

Now focus on Supporting Pt. #2 Led to Fame This near perfection of Shakespeare’s plays led to their fame. Shakespeare rose to prominence in Queen Elizabeth’s personal acting troupe called the “Lord Chamberlain’s Men”. His fame did not die with the Renaissance, but still lives on today, as it could on a stamp. Shakespeare’s fame made his impact on society all the larger. (Transition to the next Main Point)

Now, look at your first body paragraph on DTW2 Did you use any “show techniques”? If so, which ones? How good was your paragraph? A six?

Paragraph (Quiz Grade) Goal: Write a new thesis and a new body paragraph using 1-2 show techniques. Steps: 1.Re-plan for that stamp prompt, using progressive planning. 2.Write a new thesis statement and “body paragraph 1” using show techniques. 3.9 sentences total (thesis + 1 st body)
