WP6: Mechanical Studies LCFI collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Erik Johnson CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Erik Johnson, RALLCFI Collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Recent Activities at RAL In the Lab –Measurement of ladders with the upgraded LASS –Acquainting myself with the Cooling test rig In the Office –Silicon Stress studies simulation –Ladder construction concept
Erik Johnson, RALLCFI Collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Ladder Measurement Had two ladders already constructed –RVC-1, carbon foam core sandwiched by thin silicon (damaged in construction) –SiC-1, Silicon carbide substrate with silicon “floating above it” attached by adhesive pillars –Both cycled in temperature, from room temperature down to approx. -50 degrees C Upgraded Lass working well –No longer seeing ripples generated by the measurement system

Erik Johnson, RALLCFI Collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Silicon stress studies Current work to date has not come up with a reasonable reason for the magnitude and direction of curl –Assumes an homogenous layers of material deposited on the silicon In reality the material deposited is in strips Simulation of this is required and may give us the explanation we need
Erik Johnson, RALLCFI Collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Construction concept Started a plan for building a RVC ladder –Made a cartoon strip for the construction process Naturally lead to a concept for the end of a ladder
Erik Johnson, RALLCFI Collaboration meeting 19/9/2006 Other ongoing work Plans for other testing of ladders –Hydrothermal aging, radiation damage etc Informal discussions with Lola Composites about alternative uses of carbon fibre structures, eg carbon fibre barrels
