Every OHSET program should have an Emergency Action Plan : Emergencies may occur anywhere. They may not just be an injury but an unknown or unexpected onset of illness may occur  Preparation is the key to responding to the unexpected  Consider the different needs for where you plan to practice or compete.  Be sure all the coaches have a copy of your team Emergency Action Plan

 Layout of your practice facilities  Equipment  Support Personnel  Communication to external support  Follow up

 For each practice facility: ◦ Where would EMS enter and exit?  Who will meet the ambulance and give exact directions ◦ Know where access keys/codes are kept to open gates or doors ◦ Designate a gathering place for those not involved and a person in charge to keep them there ◦ Location of first aid equipment  A monthly check off of supplies to ensure they are there! ◦ A list of emergency phone numbers and a working phone

 Stocked first aid kit  Stocked basic veterinary kit  Blanket  Flashlights with spare batteries  Location of fire extinguisher  Contact numbers for team members

 Advisor  Head coach for the practice  Know resources from your membership ◦ EMTs, Nurses, Doctors, Athletic Trainers

 Be clear on how and when to call 911 or a local emergency number ◦ The caller MUST have the basic information on the athlete and the injury (age, gender, how it happened, type of injury- head injury, broken leg, etc)  Send someone to meet the ambulance and give exact directions.  Create a chain of command within your team: ◦ Designate person to contact the athlete or persons family ◦ Designate person to contact the facility owner
