Everywhere We Go CHARACTER EDUCATION We use Brain Talk with Lifelines. We weave it into our instruction. We work to make it real for students by using it in the café and on the bus. Students can contextualize it for their peers and younger students. Kids pay attention to kids.

IN OUR CLASSROOMS Academic Expectations What choices can students make in their learning to help them tailor their education? How can you tap into their metacognition so that they think about their thinking?

Let’s Focus on Word Study Today: Friday-Monday-Tuesday- Wednesday - Thursday-Friday- Decide on the principle for the following week. Give the principle to students. Create, Choose, Write on cards and planners (and build, if time) your list. Practice activity from the ABC list provided. Buddy Study Practice Test Practice activity from the ABC list provided. Final Buddy Study Test of the Week. Buddies turn in their partner’s test with card stapled to it for you to grade. Grade and transfer any missed words to next week’s list.

Create a Workshop Atmosphere *Forces students to think about their thinking, and articulate it through instructional conversations and writing. *Students become in charge of their learning. They help make decisions (with your guidance), set their own goals, and reflect on where they have been and where they want to go. *They see the classroom as a community that they can learn from and contribute to. Student Leadership Ambassador Program Students make a difference in their school by: -Learning how to become effective leaders and speakers. -Make decisions about how to change their school to make it even better. -Adopt a classroom and deliver instruction on a Lifeline once per month. -Give challenges to the student body. -Collect and document use and growth regarding character in their school. -Deliver family connect information to students, and collect data regarding parent connections. -Receive feedback from cooperating teacher regarding their growth as a speaker and leader. -Set goals for themselves and their classrooms

IN OUR COMMUNITIY CHARACTER EDUCATION It takes a village. Sometimes the village sees it as a pleasure and an honor to help you. Invite community members in to school to help you select the Lifelines you use for the following year. After all, you are preparing their future employees. They have a vested interest in your job.

IN OUR COMMUNITIY A CULTURE OF SERVICE Do the right thing. Treat people right. From my house to the White House, it’s just what we all should do. How can you market your school as one of service. What community service can you give? How will you influence your students to make a difference? ALL of us can provide service to our community!
