Decision-making skills Steps that enable you to make a healthful decision 6 basic steps (figure 2.7 page 42) May be helpful to seek advice from adults or those who have more experience in a certain field

6 Steps of the Decision Making Process State the Situation List the Options Weigh in the Possible Outcomes Consider Values Make a Decision and Act on it Evaluate your Decision

Step 1: State the Situation Examine the situation and ask yourself what decisions need to be made? Consider all facts and who else is involved?

Step 2: List the Options Possible choices you could make Share your options with parents, siblings, friends, or peers (?) Get advice

Step 3: Weigh the Possible Outcomes Use the acronym HELP to guide you through your choices H- Healthful- What health risks if any will this option present? E- Ethical- Does this choice reflect what you believe is right? L- Legal- Does this option violate any laws? P- Parent Approval- Would your parents or guardians approve of this choice?

Step 4: Consider Values Values: Ideas, beliefs and attitudes about what is important that help guide the way you live. Choices will often be a result of your values, however sometimes people will go against their values to please a crowd. NEVER a good idea

Step 5: Make a Decision and Act on It After going through the previous 4 steps you are not ready to make a decision! You should feel informed and ready to make a responsible choice

Step 6: Evaluate the Decision Reflect on the decision you made Did you like the outcome? What did you learn? Would you make the same decision again?
