Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Lesson Objectives: List some negative attitudes about physical activity and describe how to change them into positive attitudes. List some reasons why people like to exercise. Explain how you can help others have a positive attitude toward physical activity.

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Question What is an attitude?

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer An attitude is a feeling or belief about a something. Positive attitudes will help exercise adherence.

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Question Why do some teens have positive attitudes toward activity?

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer Teens have positive attitudes because they know being active improves sports performance. being active improves health. being active improves body composition.

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Question How do people form attitudes?

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer People form attitudes from their own personal experiences or from the influences of the people around them. Positive experiences lead to positive attitudes; negative experiences lead to negative attitudes.

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer Use positive self-talk. Use short-term and long-term goal setting. Speak to others about the benefits of physical activity. Have the courage to begin an exercise program. Focus on rewarding experiences you have had in physical activity.

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer People dislike the physical exertion or effort of exercise. the length of time it takes to improve. the danger or difficulties inherent in some activities (e.g., rock climbing, kayaking).

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Question What role can friends play in helping others develop positive attitudes toward physical activity?

Lesson 6.2: Attitudes Answer Friends can provide social support and encouragement. Friends can help you begin and continue a program of physical activity.

Taking Charge: Building Positive Attitudes Read about Allen and Matt in the Taking Charge section of chapter 6 (page 97). What does Allen like about being physically active? What does Matt like and not like about physical activity? How could Matt change his negative attitudes and become more active?

Taking Charge: Building Positive Attitudes What are some positive attitudes that keep people active? What are some other negative attitudes that keep people from being active, and how can those attitudes be changed? Fill out the questionnaire to find out more about your own attitudes toward physical activity.
