Surfers Against Sewage (SAS)

What it stands for.. Surfers Against Sewage is a pressure group that campaigns for clean water that is safe from toxic and nuclear waste

Problem? Surfers Against Sewage was started after a public meeting on the 10th of May 1990, by a group of surfers who were sick of surfing in unclean waters. The group is led by founder Chris Hines and they first appeared on British media when they had a 4 minute slot on the BBC, in the months following this the group campaigned at various surfing hotspots across the UK handing out pollution statistic sheets.

The following year saw the campaign was taken to Westminster with surfboards, wetsuits and gas masks. This resulted in the announcement that funding would be made for health studies in five locations in the UK, this is seen as the first SAS victory.
