CLAY PROJECT

STAGES OF CLAY Slip--watered down clay in a muddy form Leather-hard--stiff and will hold its shape; join to other pieces; carve into; recycle Greenware--bone dry; can be carved into; very fragile; can recycle Bisqueware--fired once in kiln; can not be recycled; glazing stage Earthenware (Glazeware)--second fire-low fire; can not be recycled Stoneware (Glazeware)--second fire-high fire; can not be recycled; vitrified

SLAB, COIL, PINCH SLAB METHOD- A METHOD OF MAKING POTTERY IN WHICH A THICK, FLAT PLATE, OR SLICE, OF CLAY IS CUT INTO SHAPES WHICH ARE JOINED TO FORM AN OBJECT. THE JOINED EDGES ARE SCORED AND SLIP IS USED. COILING- A METHOD OF CREATING POTS BY BUILDING BOTTOM AND WALLS WITH EVEN, ROPELIKE COILS. PINCHED METHOD- A METHOD OF MAKING POTTERY IN WHICH A BALL OF CLAY IS PRESSED, PULLED, AND PINCHED INTO A SHAPE WITH THE HANDS. THE THUMB IS USUALLY USED TO OPEN THE CENTER.

SCORE, SLIP, STICK and SMOOTH Score - Marking where the pieces are to be joined to each other. Use a fork, pin tool, knife, or other sharp tool to score grooves into the clay. Cross-hatch the grooves and make them deeper than just very light surface scratch. Slip A suspension of clay, clay body or glaze in water.

PURPOSE

ASSIGNMENT Decide on what type of container you will make Come up with two sketches (front, back, side and top) fold paper into four and draw in each square. You must include elements and principles of design in your piece ( see rubric) Clear out cubby – Your sculpture cannot be bigger than your cubby You must have a grocery bag with NO holes in it to seal your piece daily so it doesn’t dry out MAKE SURE YOUR PIECE IS HOLLOW AND HAS AIRHOLES

Clay Sketch: Rubric A day: Sketches due Friday at the end of class (5/8/15) B day: Sketches due Monday at the end of class (5/11/15)
