VON’s Business Case: Integrated Nutrition & Physical Activity Strategy for Children and Youth Andrew Ward, District Executive Director & Jillian McCallum, VON’s Ontario Student Nutrition Program, Food and Logistics Coordinator

VON’s Role in SNP & MOW

Ontario Student Nutrition Program Currently flow over $2.4 millions in provincial funding to support over 480 school nutrition programs across the South West region. VON has been testing models to bulk purchase healthy food and deliver it directly to schools to support school nutrition programs. Meals on Wheels I In 2013, we turned our MOW into a social enterprise. I It now operates out of the community kitchen at the Unemployed Help Centre. We hope to promote access to healthy MOW to more clients in this coming year.

Integrated Nutrition & Physical Activity Strategy for Children and Youth

Integrated Nutrition & Physical Activity Strategy for Children and Youth: Model Physician Referral Program designed to evaluate health related outcomes of subsidized food and physical activity programming.

Clients would receive any of the following: Nutrition education program delivered via a mobile team of registered dieticians Access to healthy food boxes and/or school meal programs for high risk clients Access to Physical Activity Coordinator Possible access to subsidized recreation programming

Two Possible Approaches Partnering Physicians: Promote the Good Food Box among all clients but may only offer subsidies for target clients. Population Health Approach: Offer subsidies to general population simply to promote uptake and evaluate impact for all.

What will we measure? 1.) Health impact using various indicators 2.) Partner with experts to design an evaluation
