1.7 Word Problems Year 2 - Geometry

Example 1 In Mrs. Hill’s perfect world, all the streets running east – west are numbered and those streets running north – south are lettered. The even numbered streets are one way east and the odd numbered streets are one way west. All the vowel lettered avenues are one way north and the rest are two way. Can a car traveling south on H Street make a legal left turn onto 8 th Street?

Example 1 Solution Draw a diagram. 6th 8th 7th 9th H YES

Example 2 Mrs. Carrasco is at the bottom of a 40 foot cliff. Each hour she climbs up 10 feet, but then slides back down 5 feet during her 30 minute break. How many hours will it take Mrs. Carrasco to get to the top of the mountain? She always climbs for one hour, then rests for 30 minutes.

Example 2 Solution Draw a diagram. 40 ft Hours! Each up arrow is an hour, each down arrow is 30 minutes.

Example 3 Mrs. Chesley is building a fence in her living room to keep all her kids penned up. The area she wants to enclose measures 12 feet by 8 feet. She will set the posts 2 feet apart. How many posts will she need?

Example 3 Solution Draw a diagram. 20 total posts! 12 feet 8 feet

Example 4 In the middle of a 400 meter race between faculty members, a photo is taken of the five runners. It shows Mr. Rothery 40 meters behind Mr. Rattigan. Mr. Rattigan is 30 meters ahead of Mr. Harder, who is 10 meters behind Mr. Lowery. Mr. Lowery is 100 meters behind Mr. Castillo. Who is ahead?

Example 4 Solution Draw a diagram. Mr. Castillo is ahead. G R H L L C

Summary Explain why drawing a diagram helps to solve word problems.
