Magellan F/5 System Status A.Szentgyorgyi/SAO/30 Apr 2005

Overview

Wide field corrector & ADC very similar to MMT. Instrument adapter to provide interface from MMT mounting to Clay rotator. Topbox for Megacam shutter & filter handling. Wavefront sensors included in instrument or topbox functionality. F/5 Secondary supplied by Magellan. Software interface to Clay guiding and mirror support software. Ancillary handling fixtures including substantial lift/tranport cart. Core Elements

Wide Field Corrector Optical Elements

Optical Fabrication Fabrication by Goodrich/Danbury complete Acceptance on 15 Dec 2004 Shipped to Cleveland Crystal for AR coating Coating in process - Lens 4 coated to spec. - Prisms coated - “Hard” lenses still ahead - Getting started is usually biggest gating item - Expect completion by 1 June 05

Selected Sol Gel for WFC Optics AR Coating

Fabrication of Lens Cells ADC bearing complete Interface ring (steel) complete Lens cell (Invar) work awaiting interface ring fit check Expect completion in time to start bonding in June Performed fit check of interface ring 21 Apr 2005

Fit Check of Interface Ring Fit is very tight Tolerance on radial misalignment few 0.001” Bore of telescope is ovalized with TIR ~0.008” TIR of Interface ring referenced to rotator bearing is 0.002”-0.003” (radial) -> Well within error budget

F/5 Lift Fixture -MMIRS requires a very large lift capabilty -WFC requires long extension and precise placement Fabrication in process Design detailing nearly complete Delivery by Aug 05

Schedule for Completion of WFC Feel full fit check and exercise of fixturing required before bonding Len 1 & 2 into cells. SAO is moving laboratories to new building at end of year. Duration of move/down time TBD. June 05 All lenses back from Cleveland Crystal June/July 05 Bond Lens 3 & 4 & ADC prisms into cells Aug 05 Ship lift fixture and WFC fixture to LCO Oct 05 Final fit check, exercise lift fixture Nov/Dec 05Bond Lens 1 & 2 into cells Jan 06 Ship to LCO

Topbox Status (Cont.) Topbox nearing completion All axes have been controlled in test set-up through prototype PMAC controller from LINUX platform Testing to continue through Summer 05 Delivery date to LCO TBD

Top Box Status Sloan filter contract will be let to SAGEM next week Filters will be single substrate, all- interference monoliths

Wavefront Sensor All components in house and tested under Linux control Prototype testing in progress Integration to Topbox and full system test in Jun/Jul

Held interface SAO w/ Skip Schaller and Alan Uomoto 14 Apr 05 Expect to have working software at time of delivery in early 2006, however will refine interfaces between delivery of WFC hardware and delivery of secondary Will bring Minicam as pathfinder for data acq. interfaces in mid Software

All WFC optics fabricated to spec. WFC coating in Cleveland Crystal ADC bearings complete Rest of lens cell structures complete by June 05 Lift LCO Sept 05 Instrument Adapter delivered 23 Apr 05 Topbox not on critical path -> near completion Project Status

Expect on-schedule delivery of full WFC harware in early Jan/Feb First light (MiniCam) depend on delivery of F/5 Secondary
