Obstacles to full participation are: unfavourable environment physical aspects social environment, values, attitudes cultural aspects

Technology is needed: for self - help and peer support to assist informal carers to provide ergonomic solutions for care professionals A new awareness of the social character of technology is also needed.

The rapid increase in the number of older people will reshape the demographic, social and cultural structure of the European Union over the next 25 years. Approximately 12% of the population of the European Union suffer from some disability. The variety of needs of people with disabilities and older people is not recognised enough.
