Chapter 1: Introduction to Geometry Advanced Geometry - Teacher Notes 8/24/2015 Chapter 1: Introduction to Geometry Section 1.1 - Getting Started

Points have no dimension represented by dots named using capital letters examples:

line m AB BA m Lines B A one-dimensional made up of points and extend infinitely in both directions named using a single, lowercase, cursive letter or named by two points on the line symbol: examples: A B m line m AB BA

MN NM Line Segments M N one-dimensional made up of points and terminate at two endpoints named using the two endpoints symbol: examples: M N MN NM

YX YW Rays W X Y one-dimensional begin at an endpoint and extend infinitely in only one direction named using the endpoint first, then another point on the ray symbol: example: W X Y YX YW

MLN or  NLM L 6 Angles M 6 L N formed by the union of two rays with a common endpoint (the vertex) three ways to name an angle: using the vertex and a point on each ray of the angle using just the vertex using a number MLN or  NLM L N M 6 L 6

Triangles A B C the union () of three line segments the intersection () of any two sides is a vertex of the triangle
