CSR/Sustainability NGO and NPO Hero By: Sam Younis

Sea Shepherd is a NPO which aims at protecting and conserving ecosystems and species by ending the destruction of habitat and slaughter of marine wildlife. This organization aims at raising awareness and ensuring the survival of oceanic wild life for future generations through controversial methods of direct intervention and the use of mass media to spread their message.

Established in 1977 when Captain Paul Watson founded the Earth force Society, Sea Shepherd was formally incorporated in 1981 in the US. In 1978, the society received financial support from Cleveland Armory of the fund for Animals and purchased its first ship. In March 1979, The sea Shepherd is the first to go to the ice for the purpose of protecting seals and save over a thousand of them on the Eastern Coast of Canada. Today Sea shepherd has done over 200 voyages covering many of the world’s oceans and defending and saving defenseless marine life while documenting and reporting on their voyages extensively.

Although their efforts have been attacked by many governments around the world condemning their use of violent tactics to intercept organizations destructive to marine wildlife one cannot deny the effectiveness of the Sea Shepherd’s utilization of the media to raise awareness of the horrific acts taking place in international waters. Over the years the organization has gained the support of many celebrities and companies who also condemn the destruction of marine wildlife even securing a television series appropriately named “Whale Wars” airing on the Discovery Channel
