Sharing the Teachings of Baha’u’llah on The Internet

The Internet and the Baha’i Faith “A mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvelous swiftness and perfect regularity.” Shoghi Effendi, The World Order of Bahá'u'lláh, Selected Letters, pp

Why On the Internet? The increasingly participatory nature of Internet activity is providing novel and creative ways of exploring Bahá’u’lláh’s compelling message of spiritual and social transformation. Bahá’ís around the globe are using the Internet to give expression to the many facets of their belief in an open and imaginative manner.

How do we do it? T he International Teaching Centre anticipates the creation of an expanding range of quality content about the Bahá’í Faith “through the flourishing of Web sites, blogs, podcasts, and other appropriate formats, in a range of key languages.” Podcast Website Wiki Forums Blogs

Principles to be Observed in the participation on the Internet Bahá’í Participation ModerationCourtesyFairnessDignityAccuracyWisdomUnderstandingFellowship

2 Parallel Forces The Creation of new communities of interaction that are increasingly global in nature. The breaking down longstanding geographic, cultural and institutional barriers The Internet appears to be playing a catalytic role in this process

The “Participation Age” An ethos of collaboration and sharing. Collaborative efforts of a group of ordinary individuals can lead to perspectives and outcomes not possible for an individual, even a recognized expert. With the emergence of interactive media, readers of news are no longer passive recipients of information, but participate in how that information is distributed and ultimately interpreted.

Channels of Participation Podcast Blogs WikiNewsgroup Website

Blogs – What's it?? An Interactive website where one person [blogger] shares information on a particular topic which is viewed and responded by his circle of interest on the internet.

Blogs Blogging opens new avenues for sharing the message of Bahá’u’lláh. It is a grassroots participatory undertaking

Blogs Blogs can serve as an instrument to draw that particular community of interest to the Revelation and to Bahá’í community activity The networking phenomenon associated with blogs allows for information to reach potentially large numbers of like-minded people

What should I blog about? Sharing stories and experiences that have spiritual significance; Correlation of the Bahá’í teachings with contemporary social challenges; Presentation and exploration of the Creative Word; Basic beliefs of the Faith; Community and family life; Artistic expression and Bahá’í identity; The pursuit of moral excellence; Few Examples:

Sustained Effort! Starting a blog is easy, but sustaining a blog directed to a wider audience is not. Once the blog has been established, continual Effort is required.

The Roadless Travelled…. Unlike web sites, blogs can often be developed at no expense and with no design work required The key to a successful blog is having something to say that will be of interest to others

Spreading the word Increasingly, a common approach to blogging is organic in character: inviting your friends and acquaintances to read and react to your posts and then gradually expanding your community of interest

Podcasting ?

What is it? A podcast is a collection of digital media files which is distributed over the Internet, often using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers.

So is it like Radio ? 1.It is an internet based radio where the audio files are available as mp3 downloads. 2.Listeners can download when they want and listen where they want. 3.It is easy to setup a podcast with just a Mic, computer and a good internet connection.

In Perspective …. Podcasts provide a unique vehicle to share first person testimonies of faith, reflections about the Bahá’í teachings, or educational material. Unlike text, they allow the powers of the human spirit to be more directly experienced by listeners.

Traditional Broadcast Information is published from one source to many subscribers. Users don’t have choice over content. Geography is a barrier. Users can not listen when ever they want to listen.

Podcasting Advantages 1.Freedom of Content. 2.Freedom of Geography. 3.Low cost production. 4.Far and Wide Reachability

Podcasting is Democratization of Information!!
