WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Seven Things to Tell an Interviewer WORK-BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS 1

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS You Will Learn seven things you should be prepared for in a job interview. 2

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Pre-test (true/false) 1.Never try and explain job gaps on your résumé. 2.It is not necessary to come to an interview with contact information about prior employers, dates, etc. 3.Always try and say positive things about your previous jobs. 4.Be consistent in your answers. 5.Be able to articulate your long-term career goals. 6.Be sure you know exactly what you want as far as salary, benefits, etc., and don’t agree to less. 7.Be prepared! Do your homework beforehand. Have questions you want to ask, bring a copy of your résumé, conduct a “mock” interview, etc. 3

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Avoid “Red Flags” These are things that will alert your interviewer that you may be unsuitable for the job. 4

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Make Sure You Can Explain Long Gaps Between Jobs If you have a gap of more than three months between jobs, be prepared with a good explanation 5 1

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Come Prepared with Credible References If you have cited a job on your résumé, make sure you can provide the supervisor’s name, address, phone number, employment dates, etc. 2

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Hint: Interviewers may overlook a job gap if you have a past employer who gives you high marks. Be sure to check with past employers ahead of time to make sure they are prepared to give you a good recommendation.

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Speak Positively About Your Past Jobs and Employers “Spin” your answers to project positivism. Complaints about past jobs and employers can often reflect badly on you! 8 3

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Be Consistent in Your Answers Often, interviewers will ask the same questions in different ways. Keep your answers the same in order to project honesty and sincerity – both traits employers look for. 9 4

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Be Able to Articulate Your Long Term Goals Be prepared to discuss where you want to go and how you plan to get there. Otherwise, you may seem unfocused and unmotivated. 10 5

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Be Flexible and Realistic About Your Expectations It’s okay to have a “bottom line” as far as what you want in terms of responsibilities, salary, benefits, etc., but you have to be willing to bend a bit if necessary. 6

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Do Your Homework! Research the company. Come prepared to the interview with questions you want to ask. Bring a copy of your résumé. Conduct “mock” interviews beforehand. The more prepared you are, the more the interviewer will take you seriously. 7

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Post Test 13 1.Never try and explain job gaps on your résumé. (F) 2.It is not necessary come to an interview with contact information about prior employers, dates, etc. (F) 3.Always try and say positive things about your previous jobs. (T) 4.Be consistent in your answers. (T) 5.Be able to articulate your long-term career goals. (T) 6.Be sure you know exactly what you want as far as salary, benefits, etc., and don’t agree to less. (F) 7.Be prepared! Do your homework beforehand. Have questions you want to ask, bring a copy of your résumé, conduct a “mock” interview, etc. (T)

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Assessment Watch the two videos provided on the Technical Resources slide. Complete the following: After watching the videos, find 3 examples of 3 different rules discussed in this presentation. Describe briefly which rule is being applied. Is it being applied properly? Why or why not. (Each answer is worth 20 points; total is 60 points.) 14

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Technical Resources Basic Interviewing Skills: An Online Video Time to Interview a Job Candidate Video

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Grading Rubric Range of Points for Answers to Video Assignment: 20 – You were right on the mark 15 – You were mostly correct. 10 – You tried, but your example could be better. 5 – You did not convince me that you watched either of the videos. Try again. 1– You did not properly interpret the assignment. Try again.

WORK BASED LEARNING VIRTUAL CAMPUS Bonus (40 extra points) See if you can come up with an eighth rule for interviewees to follow. Search for an online video or website to substantiate your answer. Describe the rule. Provide resources to document your findings. 8
