Why do the goal setting assignment? –Teach you how to construct SMART goals for yourself –Now that you know yourself more ‘fully’ you can construct appropriate goals for yourself –To help generalize your knowledge of how to construct goals for yourself to constructing SMART goals for your group for proposal assignment –Other reasons… generated by class will be posted on class website Answers to Qs Re: Homework Activities

Why search for the management analyst job description? –For this class Helps in doing the in-class exercise where you design interview questions. One cannot design interview questions without a proper job description –For managers in general Helps you design an interview that has more content validity –For applicants applying for a management analyst position Can help you assess whether you have the KSAOs to do the job. Can help you assess whether you would like to do the job. Helps you prepare possible interview questions Review of Homework Activities

Define & list advantages of –Psychological style resume –Functional style resume –Chronological style Functional organizes jobs based on skills, useful for those who have gaps in employment histories (e.g., women on mat leave) Functional is harder to read & comprehend Psychological blends both chronological (time based) and functional (skill based) Psychological is based on psychological research & theory – uses principles mentioned in Text Chronological is most commonly used (again, commonly used does not make it ‘right’) Review of Homework Activities

How is resume advice given in text different from advice given in career centers? What is the lesson learned about resume construction? –Advice from career centers is often based on common knowledge or on common practice. It may work, but research based evidence is better than doing what everyone else is doing –Research & Theory based instruments (i.e., psychological resumes) are better than merely following tradition. Same point made for NOT using MBTI for measuring personality – it is used by lots of organizations but it does not demonstrate validity –Design resume to fit the job description before submitting your resume toward a job advertisement Review of Homework Activities
