Education DEA agents are required to have a bachelors degree in criminal justice. A DEA agent must be at least 21 years old and in excellent physical condition. They cannot be over 36 years old. New agents attend training for 16 weeks where they are educated in report writing, law, drug recognition, leadership and ethics.

Salary New DEA Agents are hired on at the GS-7 ($35,369 to $44,729) or GS-9 ($39,448 to $50,905) level depending on experience and education. Within three years it is very possible to reach the GS-12 pay level.

What does a DEA Agent Do A DEA agent enforces the United States government’s laws and regulations regarding controlled substances. They are required to follow the agency’s directives to identify, arrest and successfully prosecute offenders. These offenders may be located in the United States or in other countries. The offender may be an individual operating independently or part of a larger group. DEA agents are increasingly involved in the investigation and prosecution of terrorist groups, because of the ties these groups usually have drugs and drug trafficking. The profits of these international drug trade deals commonly fund other criminal activity.
