Noninfectious Disease Mr. Fox 7 th Grade Science Class

Immunity Noninfectious Disease – diseases that are not spread from person to person. What are some noninfectious diseases?

Allergies Allergy – a disorder in which the immune system is overly sensitive to a foreign substance, something not normally found in the body. Allergen – the substance that causes the allergy.

How it Happens The allergen gets into the body, and antibodies are produced. The body then releases a chemical called histamine, which is responsible for sneezing, watery eyes, rash… ect. The histamine causes the immune system to freak out about the allergen causing a much more violent reaction.

Asthma Asthma – respiratory disorder in which the passages narrow significantly. – Causes wheezing and shortness of breath – Attacks can also be triggered by stress and exercise. – Asthma attacks can get so bad that emergency medical help may be needed.

Diabetes A disorder in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin. High levels of glucose in the blood and the urine, but not in the cells. Effects if not treated – Blindness, Kidney failure, heart disease, loss of limbs.

Cancer Most common Cancers in the US as of 2000 Men - Prostate, Lung, Large Intestine, Bladder Women – Breast, Lung, Large Intestine, Uterus

Cancer A disease in which the cells multiply uncontrollably, destroying healthy tissue. Tumors – mass of abnormal tissue Caused by carcinogens. Ultraviolet light from the sun, tar from smoking, other chemicals.
