Kaumudi Nagaraju, EnhanceEdu Pedagogy and Learning Styles
Agenda o Pedagogy o Learning Styles o Multiple Intelligences o VAK
Objectives of this session To share ideas on: o Pedagogy o Learning Styles & their classroom application
Is Teaching an Art or a Science?
What is Pedagogy?
Teacher-centered/Student- centered “Learning-centered?” Teacher-centered LearningStudent-centered learning Low level of student choice Student passive Power primarily with teacher High level of student choice Student active Power primarily with student
Case - 1 o You got a new mobile phone. What would you do? o Take it out of the box and fiddle with the pieces before you read any instructions? o Read all of the instructions before you attempt to press any buttons? o Ask someone else to read the instructions and explain it to you or read the instructions out to yourself aloud?
Case - 2 o You gave a lecture in the class and you see that half of the students have put blank faces. What do you do?
Learner Styles
How it helps? o Teachers: o Natural inclination towards one’s own learning style o Understand that Students with different styles learn & process information differently o Apply teaching strategies for multiple learning styles o Students: o Learn how he/she learns o Use appropriate study methods
Many theories o Gardner Theory of Multiple Intelligences o Neil Fleming: VARK o Variation of a theme – VAK
Multiple Intelligences EnhanceEdu Howard Gardner
Multiple Intelligences
MI - Application Logical/Mathematical Think through algebraic word problems Approach a scientific experiment Create a process Verbal/Linguistic Lectures Student presentations Musical/Rhythmic Age-appropriate poem or song Invite your learners to write their own lyrics Bodily/Kinesthetic Tasks/Exercises 3-D models Role-plays Simulations Re-enacting historical moments Intrapersonal Make them work independently Encourage him towards his goals
MI - Application Interpersonal Team activities Partner projects Games Naturalist Examples that connect with natural surroundings Visual/Spatial Videos Make use of a learner's visual-spatial strengths in lessons and workshops Create visual images to capture the meaning of a math word problem Sketch the layout of a building Existentialist
VAK Theory
VAK - Application o Two possibilities o Delivery catering to multiple preferences & styles o Create a learning environment where the student participates with their learning styles
Visual - Application o Teacher-centered o Use graphs, charts, illustrations, or other visual aids o Include outlines, concept maps, mind maps, agendas, handouts, etc. for reading and taking notes o Student-centered o Ask students to draw, make posters, create visuals o Have the learners envision the topic or have them act out the subject matter
Auditory - Application o Teacher-centered o Lectures o Interview with Q&A o Quiz games o Student-centered o Student presents on a subject o Debate o Peer teaching/learning o Group work
Kinesthetic - Application o Teacher-centered o Use activities o Have models to pass around in class o Frequent stretch breaks o Student-centered o Student create experiments, simulations & demos o Role Play o Have them transfer information from text to other medium
To remember... o A typical classroom will include students with a variety of preferred learning styles o Lots of learning styles – be a bit familiar with some of the major ones o Choose a theory that makes the most sense to you, apply it to both you and your students o One style is not better than the other. Most learners will have a combination of more than one style o Key to meeting individual students needs is to ensure a variety of learning styles in every lesson
Learning Styles in Engineering Education o /papers/1158.pdf /papers/1158.pdf o /public/Papers/LS-1988.pdf /public/Papers/LS-1988.pdf o Spring-2001/sutliff.html Spring-2001/sutliff.html
Task o Please read categories and questions on the sheet provided to you, row by row. o Put a check mark against all the descriptions that suit your learning style. o After completing checking against the boxes provided in the last row, add up check marks per column. o Column with highest total shows your learning style.
Thank You
