Manatee Genealogical Society Searching for Genealogical Photographs Internet (Static Searches) Internet (Dynamic Searches) What do you do if not on Internet Manipulating Photos for Genealogy – Changing Sizes – Popular Graphic Formats – Converting Graphic Formats – Inserting Captions/Tags on Pictures – Inserting Pictures into Apps – Fixing Photographs 2 Overview

Manatee Genealogical Society Many 3 Changing Sizes - 1 Insert Picture Select Picture Select Insert

Manatee Genealogical Society Changing Sizes Note Margins Default PowerPoint Is 7.5” x 10” For 8.5” x 11” Piece of Paper Need to Adjust To Photo Size So there is No White Margin on Page Next Slide

Manatee Genealogical Society Changing Sizes ” x 6.75” Should Do Before Changing; Cut Picture Then Design → Page Setup Change to 10” x 6.75” Hit “OK” Then Paste Picture Note: Perfect Fit; No White Margins Showing Also No Part of Picture Overlapping Page Sizing can be done for any picture Using same process to any size

Manatee Genealogical Society GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) – Bitmapped image developed in 1987 by CompuServe stores compressed images with up to 256 colors. It became popular on the Web because it was the only format that could be displayed in-line by the first multi- platform Web browser (8 bit color) JPG/JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) – is a commonly used method of lossy compression for photographic images. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality (24 bit color). PNG (Portable Network Graphics) – Bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to replace GIF as an image-file format not requiring a patent license. (24/48 bit color) TIF/TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) – File format for storing images, including photographs and line art. The files are usually huge, as the data is not significantly compressed. (24/48 bit color) Not supported by many browsers BMP (BitMaP file format), also known as bitmap image file or Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) file format or simply a bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device (such as a graphics adapter), especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. (>8 bit color) Lossy Compression Method is one where compressing data and then decompressing it retrieves data that is different from the original, but is close enough to be useful in some way 6 Popular Graphic Formats - 1

Manatee Genealogical Society 7 Popular Graphic Formats - 2 Properties: Photographic Images - Photos are continuous tones, 24 bit color or 8 bit Gray, no text, few lines and edges Graphics (Including Logos & Line Art) - Graphics are often solid colors, up to 256 colors, with text or lines and sharp edges CriteriaPhotographic ImagesGraphics For Best QualityTIF or PNGPNG or TIF Smallest File SizeJPGTIF, GIF, or PNG Maximum CompatibilityTIF or JPGTIF or GIF Worst ChoiceGIF (256 Colors is limited) & larger file than JPG JPG smears lines & edges & compression adds artifacts

Manatee Genealogical Society Converting Graphic Formats Note: Perfect Fit; No White Margins Showing Also No Part of Picture Overlapping Page GIF KBJPEG – 89.2 KB PNG – 1.48 MBTIFF – 2.01 MB

Manatee Genealogical Society  Useful to Save Original Image in case Modified image is Not to your liking  Modified Images are frequently lower resolution than the original; They never have greater resolution  Any file converted from one format to another will always have less resolution even if the size is greater  Many applications out there to help one process and organize photos: 9 Converting Graphic Formats - 2 Recommend keeping original format Windows Store

20 WHAT IS IT? A meeting of genealogists interested in using their personal computers to enhance their research. WHEN? Monthly -- On the first Tuesday of the month (October through May) following main topic speaker. TIME: About 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM, following the meeting break period after the main MGS speaker. PLACE: The Central Library Auditorium, Bradenton, FL (same location as our MGS monthly meeting) WHO: Open to all those interested in using their personal computers to enhance their genealogical research. PROGRAM: Each month we will discuss and view what's new in genealogy on the Internet. We'll have demonstrations of software and hardware that will facilitate our research. Tips and techniques will be shared by and among those attending each meeting. Genealogically related computer, Internet, digital photography and research questions will be fielded during the sessions. We'll look at the newest technology but will keep the discussions as low tech as possible. What topics would you like to hear?????? MGS Computer Special Interest Group (SIG)
