Reformers

Reverse What did Tiberius Gracchus think caused Rome's problems? 1) What two solutions did Tiberius Gracchus have for Rome’s Problems? 1) 2) What three solutions did Gaius Gracchus have to solve Rome’s troubles? 1) 2) 3)

Tiberius Gracchus What did Tiberius Gracchus feel caused Rome's problems? Felt small farmers leaving their land had caused Rome’s troubles. What was his solution to this problem? He wanted to divide up public land and give it to the poor. He wanted to limit the amount of land a person could own.

Gaius Gracchus Tiberius’s young brother, was elected tribune. What was Gaius Gracchus answer to Rome’s troubles? He felt moving the poor from the city back to the countryside was the answer to Rome’s problems. He improved and extended the reforms of his brother

Gaius Gracchus He took over the sale of wheat and sold it to the poor below market value. How did this become a problem? But before long, bread was being given away rather than sold. One out of every three Romans was receiving free bread.

The Generals Gaius Marius- He was the first lower class citizen of Rome to be elected to high office. Supported by ex-soldiers, who lost their farm land when they went to fight. He opened up the military so that anyone could fight in it.

The Generals What was Marius’s solution? Marius thought he could end all of Rome’s problems by setting up an army. Prior to this time only land owners could join the military. How did Marius convince the poor to join? He offered them pay, land, pensions, etc.

The Generals Lucius Cornelius Sulla He opposed Marius What did Sulla do to become dictator? When Marius tried to stop Sulla, he marched his army on Rome and seized the city. He was the first Roman Commander to lead his military against the capital. He weakened the power of the Tribunes.

The Generals Sulla was the first man to declare himself dictator of Rome.
