Autonomic Nervous System

Divisions Sympathetic: “Saber tooth Tiger” All processes speed up except for digestion Parasympathetic: “Resting and Digesting” All processes slow down, except digestion

ANS effectors Cardiac muscle Smooth muscle Glands (known as visceral effectors)

Terms Ganglion (ganglia):junction boxes Switches Multiple “wires” being redirected Cholinergic fibers: secrete noepinephrine Adrenergic fibers: secrete acetylcholine

Two pathways Sympathetic and parasympathetic Different: Where they originate Distance to ganglion(length of fibers) Type of neurotransmitter Same: Effectors: muscle;cardiac and smooth, glands

Sympathetic Thoracolumbar Originates; thoracic and upper lumbar segments Short preganglionic fibers secrete acetylcholine Long post ganglionic fibers secrete norepinephrine Effectors; multiple at one time Fight or flight, response to emotions

Parasympathetic Craniosacral Originates brain stem and sacral segments of spinal cord Long preganglion fibers secrete acetylcholine Short post ganglion fibers secrete acetylocholine Effectors; generally one Normal everyday activities

Cranial Nerves Only Old Octopi Travel To Argentina For Very Good Vegetables And Hamburgers Only one orange tries to attack furry very girly vegetables and hippos One Orange Orange Thought The Apple Faced Very Gross Veggies After Hiding Only Odd Oranges Try To Arrest Fat Villains, Good Villains Always Hide Only Old Orangutans Fight The Very Girly Aardvarks and The Vicious Hippos On Organs, Oliver Twist Tapes A Funny Video Grouping Villains and Heroes

overall Automatic control Maintains or restores homeostasis Different pathways Different neurotransmitters Sam effectors Different control

Somatic Division 31 pairs spinal nerves/12 pairs cranial nerves 8/12/5/5,1 pair attached to coccygeal segment Named by letter and number C1, T12 Branch to peripheral nerves in body Sometimes braid together called a plexus

Functions Movement and sensation (sensory and motor neurons) Spinal nerves follow pathways called dermatomes which can be assessed for functioning at the skin level.

Flow of CSF Filtered out from blood capillaries known as choroid plexus Two large spaces: lateral ventricles (R and L) Flows down through aqueduct to third ventricle Then to a fourth ventricle down to subarachnoid space near cerebellum Then to spinal cord Purpose: protection
