 All nerves that branch out from the central nervous system penetrate every part of the body, thus making up the peripheral nervous system. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The cranial nerves number twelve pairs and are named as number I through XII following the order in which they leave the cranial fossa AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 They are also named according to their function or distribution.  Each cranial nerve is paired; that is, one exits from each side of the skull AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

 The trigeminal nerve is the most extensive and important nerve of the facial region and oral cavity providing sensory fibers for the face, oral cavity and the teeth, and motor fibers to the muscles of mastication and some other muscles. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team
