All other product or service names are the property of their respective owners. © Motorola, Inc PAGE 2 Background In C , Qualcomm proposed Page w/Channel Assignment, where the MS goes directly to the Traffic Channel without sending a page response. In C , Motorola proposed a RESPONSE_IND field for the Page w/Channel Assignment, to indicate to the mobile whether or not a page response is required. The values of RESPOND_IND are as follows: –’00’: MS does not send page response (i.e. same as Qualcomm proposal) –’01’: MS must send page response, in assured mode –’10’: MS must send page response, in unassured mode The page response is useful if the BS wants early confirmation that the MS is “present”, while still reducing call setup time –Page response on access channel is currently significantly faster than TCH acquisition QUESTION: what is the relative benefit of ’10’ compared to ’01’?

All other product or service names are the property of their respective owners. © Motorola, Inc PAGE 6 Observations For “MS Declared Present”, page response modes (’01’ and ’10’) are 330 ms faster than no page response mode (’00’) –Page response modes still improve call setup time, but without delaying “MS Declared Present” indication –Page response mode should be available as an option For the two page response modes, unassured mode (’10’) outperforms assured mode (’01’) –Unassured mode (’10’) is the best option for when fast “MS Present” indication is needed Slightly slower than assured mode for “1 st probe failed / 2 nd probe successful” case, only because current TCH acquisition delay is slightly longer than probe retry delay Also saves PCH capacity –Assured mode (’01’) should also be included for cases where page response is absolutely needed
